Sources: WQAM and 790 head into the home $tretch

Featured Replies

According to several sources, Clear Channel South Florida has dropped out of the Marlins Radio Race. The largest radio company in the country (and South Florida for that matter) says that the bidding price has gotten too high for them and they wish the Marlins luck.

WQAM and 790 ESPN Radio are entrenched in a money and perks-laden bidding war which could land the team one of the best radio coverage contracts in Sports.

The team says it has no qualms with leaving WQAM, it also says they have no qualms staying on WQAM even if Stern leaves. The Marlins have told both sides, the highest bidder gets the rights.

Look for it to get very interesting. The Marlins are the only team other than Washington who have not yet signed a radio deal for 2005. Then again, never has any MLB team seen bidding go this long.

MLB was worried that signing with XM would lower rights fees, but for the Marlins...it hasn't played much of a factor.

What is the format of the bidding process?

Each station submits a bid, and the Marlins ask the other ones to top it?

Sounds fishy.

Team meets with each station and tells the station what they want. WQAM had window of exclusivity, but that is now long gone. So WQAM presents an offer, then WAXY gets to present its offer. They keep going until someone folds or the Marlins finally decide it is time to ink with someone.

Think of it like a game of poker, they keep raising the pot, but eventually someone's hand will beat the other unless one gets scared and backs off.
