What is going on with this? Bernie Williams is no longer a threat in that lineup and for an old team like the Yankees you usually won't get the chance to sign a young star like Beltran for a long, long time.

I don't think they wanted to add another big money amount to their already over-paid payroll... Williams can go 2 more years atleast and then they will pursue somebody fast and young or bring somebody up.

With them already over the cap for 3 straight years, Beltran's $17 million salary would have cost them $21 million. Plus, the contracts of Jeter and Giambi are heavily backloaded meaning that they're going to start paying those guys in excess of $20 mil a season soon.
