Team Analysis: First 20 games

Recommended Posts

Well, the first sixth of the season is in the books. Pitching has been terrific, hitting has been disappointing, although not with runners in scoring position. Here's how the Marlins rank:

Offense

Aggregate With runners in scoring position

9th out of 16 in OPS, 6th out of 16th in OPS

7th out of 16 in Runs scored 4th out of 16th in Runs scored

7th out of 16 in AVG 2nd out of 16 in AVG

Defense

Aggregate With runners in scoring position

1st out of 16 in ERA (2.25, +0.78) 1st out of 16 in ERA (5.05, +0.46)

1st out of 16 in opp. OPS (.590 +.071) 1st out of 16 in opp. OPS (.536, +.160)

1st out of 16 in opp. AVG (.215, +.022) 1st out of 16 in opp. AVG (.196, +.022)

To me, what's most impressive is how our pitching gets even better with opposing runners in scoring position. The difference between our OPS allowed and the No. 2 team's OPS allowed with RUSP is OVER TWICE as great as the difference between our OPS allowed and the No. 2 team's OPS allowed in the aggregate!

Also, we're hitting much better with RUSP. So what's the problem with our hitting?

First of all, we're not running like we used to. We've only stolen 8 bases in 20 games, tying us with the Bucs for 12th in the league. Moreover, we've been caught stealing 7 times. We also haven't been patient at the plate: our 63 walks ties us for 11th out of 16 teams. Combine the lack of speed and patience with the lack of HRs (14 -- 14th out of 16), and you've got a sluggish offense.

Good post DC. Although I wouldn't expect us to jump up the scale much in walks. These guys hack. Delgado will help, but Enc & Alex have been walking more than usual, wouldn't expect that to keep up (though it's good to see). For the most part these guys are up there swinging. Marlins are always a low-walks, low-strikeouts, put the ball in play team.

The statistics aren't showing how bad the Marlins offense has been. In fact the stats are making the hitting look better than it has been. The problem is that the marlins have blowout wins that skew the overall data. The Marlins have scored 2 runs or less in 7 of the 20 games (and 3 or less in 8 of 20). More than a third of the time, the offense is essentially useless.

Also, I don't think lack of stolen bases is the reason for not scoring consistently. Boston, Chicago, Texas, and San Fran who all were in the top 7 in runs scored last year were near the bottom is stolen bases. The lack of walks and power is killing us right now.
