Smith will start Game 2

Featured Replies

The teams will use relievers Travis Smith and Jose Acevedo in the second game tomorrow. A.J. Burnett and Jason Jennings will start the first game

Last team to bat wins.

:(

Smith was the only guy in the bullpen that has started a game this year. But Smith did poorly at Albuquerque and Bump's sinking fastball would be best at Coors. We'll probably see both of them pitch a couple innings tomorrow. Same for the rest of the 'pen.

I just hope Jack is not expecting 5+ innings of Smith and is willing to employ the ever rare fast hook.

damn, I wanted to see Bump get a chance. He pitched very well when he was sent down to AAA, last year working as a starter at a place very much like Coors. I'm sure he'll make an appearance in that game though.

Interesting indeed. :mischief2

I think this is the smart move by Jack and Mark. Obviously you don't want Al to go back out there tomorrow and A.J. does get his spot in the rotation, but it also gives Dontrelle his normal day off and gets him ready for the Philly series.

I can see its going to be a horrendous score, but I have confidence the Fish will come out on top. :mischief

Yep, this confirms Kim as the starter in Game 2:

Snow wipes out Marlins-Rox in Denver

Teams will play doubleheader on Thursday afternoon

By Owen Perkins / Special to MLB.com

DENVER -- The Marlins and Rockies postponed their Wednesday night game after cold, rain and snow conspired to make conditions unplayable.

After a 93-minute rain delay, the skies cleared and the game began with 35-degree temperatures, tied for the second coldest game-time temperature in Coors Field history. The game had to be stopped in the bottom of the second, however, when snow began falling hard. After a 38-minute delay, the game was postponed.

"I wish we would have never started. I'd be pitching tomorrow," said Marlins starter Al Leiter, who faced seven batters in 1 1/3 innings. "Once it's started, I'd like to keep playing. I've played in the snow before. I remember Game 5 in the World Series in Cleveland (in 1995, between the Marlins and Indians) when it was snowing. There were snowflakes. I don't know if they were bigger."

The two teams will try to make up the game in a traditional doubleheader on Thursday, with the regularly scheduled game at 3:05 p.m. ET, and the second game beginning 25 minutes after the conclusion of the first. The regularly scheduled starters will pitch in the first game, with A.J. Burnett throwing for the Marlins and Jason Jennings going for the Rockies.

Both teams will send out pitchers to make their first start of the season for the second game, with the Marlins' Travis Smith facing the Rockies' Byung-Hyun Kim.

"Tomorrow, I hope we don't burn A.J.," said Leiter. "I hate to see the proverbial window that opens up for 40 minutes and you burn A.J. He gets his two or three innings and now you lost him."

On Wednesday, the Rockies had taken a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a shallow fly ball to right that turned into a Matt Holliday double, followed by Todd Greene's hard grounder down the third-base line that got past Mike Lowell, who was charged with an error.

"It was as bad as I've ever seen," Lowell said after the game. The error ultimately didn't count, since all results are thrown out from the postponed game, but Lowell didn't blame the weather. "I was really hoping they wouldn't hit me a line drive. Rain's one thing, but snow?"

Leiter was not fazed by the weather, and didn't think it played a part in the Rockies' rally in the bottom of the second, noting that the snow gave the pitcher an advantage against the hitter.

"They're trying to decipher snowflakes and a ball, so it's much more difficult for hitters than a pitcher," Leiter said.

Btw, I didn't know we played in the WS in '95 :whistle
