Posted May 3, 200520 yr Is there a thread on this? I don't see one. A mod can delete this, if I somehow overlooked one. Anyway, just to briefly recap the story: The Rockets lose a close Game 5 to the Mavs. Yao Ming gets some fouls called on him. Van Gundy complains to three reporters in the team hotel after the game that Yao is being treated unfairly by the refs. He says that one referee, a friend of Van Gundy's, called him and told him that the league's refs were looking closely at Yao partly because of Mark Cuban's complaints to the league about Yao's "moving screens". David Stern fines Van Gundy $100,000, twice the previous biggest fine for a coach, and promises that an investigation into the incident and possibly more punishment will come after the Rockets season. He is also placing a ton of pressure on Van Gundy to release the name of the referee who allegedly told him about all this. End recap. Stern appears to be on a war path here. His words on the subject are very, very aggressive. It seems to me like he's trying to intimidate Van Gundy into either retracting his statement or at least naming names. Van Gundy said he felt his meeting with league officials was like a Watergate interrogation. What was really amazing to me was that Van Gundy stood by his comments a day later, and even seemed to be taking a lighthearted approach to a situation that could potentially cost him his job. But the longer VG stands by his comments, and the harder Stern pushes publicly, the worse Stern and the league are going to look. It appears as if Stern doth protest too much. I mean, we all know that different players are officiated differently, and that the calls even change depending on the importance of the moment and the game. I guess all the anger from Stern comes from the fact that VG is claiming that the league office has a direct hand in this. But the fine and the rhetoric seem completely out of control.

May 3, 200520 yr I hope the Rockets suck because of this. 761602[/snapback] And you didn't hope for that before?
May 3, 200520 yr I saw that game and the officiating was pretty terrible. I am a Heat fan, but it looked to me like all the bad calls were going against the Rockets, especially at the end. This is one game where I think the bad officiating caused a team the game. The Rockets should have won.

May 3, 200520 yr officiating in the NBA is pathetic anyways...Bad calls go both ways. Van Gundy is probably right, but going public about this is not the answer especially with Stern around
