And working the count is very important for him and the team. By working the count he can make the pitchers work more and get them out of the game earlier. Also, when you have long AB's, and you see a lot of pitches, the advantage arrow turns your way because you get a better idea of what pitch he's going to throw next. And not only does that benefit him, but that benefits the whole team in getting a better approach facing pitchers. If he makes the pitcher work like Pierre usually does, Castillo was doing, and Lo Duca is doing, then he'll be staying in the lineup as long as he produces something substantial at the plate.
