Vanden Hurk, a Eindhover, Holland native has spent the 2005 season in extended spring training with the Florida Marlins. In 2004, the right-hander pitched in 14 games with a 3.26 ERA while playing with the Jupiter Hammerheads, the Marlin's high-class A affiliate. In his 14 game starts in the Florida State League, Vanden Hurk (2-3) pitched 58.0 innings allowing 22 hits and 21 earned runs. He struck out 43 batters and walked 31. The 19-year-old was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Marlins in 2002. Recently Greensboro pitcher and first round draft pick, Jeff Allison was sent to Jupiter, Fl with reports of a tender rotator cuff. Allison is scheduled to pitch again on Monday, May 30 in Charleston, SC. I'm surprised he didn't start the year at Jupiter since he was listed on their roster. This kid is someone to watch for, he's only 19 and was listed as the marlins 15th best prospect according to baseball america. Hopefully he can pick up where he left off last year in Jupiter before he got injured.
