Pavano tough in Marlins' loss

VERO BEACH, Fla. -- Ron Coomer smacked a two-run home run off Armando Almanza as the Dodgers rolled past the Marlins, 6-4, on Monday at Holman Stadium.

 

Coomer belted a hanging curveball in a three-run Dodgers sixth to spark the comeback.

 

Mike Lowell and Ramon Castro each belted solo home runs for the Marlins. Almanza took the loss, and Victor Alvarez collected the win.

 

The Marlins took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning on Lowell's solo home runs off Eric Gagne.

 

But Tim Spooneybarger gave up two runs in the fifth as the Dodgers tied the score at 3. Wilkin Ruan had an RBI single, and Mike Kinkade tied it on a sacrifice fly.

 

A drag-bunt RBI single by Mike Mordecai in the fourth inning gave the Marlins a 2-1 lead. Al Martin, who had two hits, singled and moved to third on Mike Redmond's single. Mordecai pushed a perfect bunt to second, scoring Martin without a play home.

 

Despite giving up one run in two innings, Carl Pavano was impressive in his first outing. Eighteen of the right-hander's 23 pitches were strikes.

 

The Dodgers' run was scratched out on a seeing-eye double by Brian Jordan, a soft liner that hugged the right-field line, and a bloop RBI single over short by Todd Hundley.

 

Pavano worked a perfect first inning, retiring the three batters on eight pitches, seven of which were strikes.

 

The Marlins manufactured a run in the third when Derrek Lee's sacrifice fly scored Josh Willingham. Willingham doubled off Hideo Nomo and moved to third on Andy Fox's bunt.

 

Castro homered off Mark Corey in the ninth.

Ugh! Another game blown by almanza. Again we lost by just 1 or 2 runs. We were the best at those games. I hope we rebound and start playing better than we are.

it doesnt matter if we go 2-21 in ST it matters when season starts!
