July 2, 200521 yr DOWN, NOT OUT A day after the Marlins demoted him to the minors, right-hander John Riedling was still having trouble digesting the decision. Riedling, 4-1 with a 7.04 ERA in 23 innings, was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque to accommodate Beckett's return from the disabled list. "Things were getting better," said Riedling, who gave up three hits, including an Andruw Jones solo homer, in his last appearance Wednesday. "I felt like I was turning the corner. That's what bothered me. I made a bad pitch to the National League home run leader. He's hit 24, 25 of those. I'm just going to go down and do my thing." Riedling is a half season short of totaling five years of major league service time. Players with that much experience can refuse a minor league assignment. Riedling will continue earning his $750,000 major league salary with the Isotopes, a team he will join Sunday. "He was unhappy and we weren't especially happy about having to do it either," Admin Beinfest said. "We wanted to get John some more regular work." OSBORNE ADDED The Marlins this week signed former major league lefty Donovan Osborne and assigned him to Triple-A Albuquerque. A member of the Cardinals for seven of his nine big-league seasons, Osborne made his first start for the Isotopes on Friday in Omaha, Neb. Osborne, 36, was pitching for the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League, where he was 2-4 with a 1.99 ERA in 631/3 innings (12 starts). He had tossed four consecutive complete games, including two shutouts, before signing with the Marlins. The owner of a 49-46 record and 4.03 lifetime ERA, Osborne last pitched in the majors in 2004, making nine appearances (172/3 innings) for the Yankees. Since 1998, Osborne has totaled 63 major league innings and logged a 6.05 ERA over that stretch. Osborne underwent reconstructive shoulder surgery in 1993 and has since struggled to stay healthy. He's also sustained a torn groin, broken ribs, a hernia and shoulder tendinitis. Link to Full Article Let's hope the extra work does Riedling some good.
July 2, 200521 yr if john riedling didnt suck horrendously, he wouldnt have gotten demoted. grow up and learn to pitch.
July 3, 200521 yr I hope Riedling can get back to pre-injury strength. Just not during tight spots for the major league team. Peng, Oliver was a very good reliever for us at a point when we were desperate.
