Posted July 2, 200520 yr SAN DIEGO -- According to a report in the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Padres and Yankees have agreed on a trade that would send left-hander Darrell May and right-hander Tim Redding to the Yankees in exchange for right-handed reliever Paul Quantrill. The newspaper said in Saturday's editions that the swap was made late Friday night. Neither the Padres nor Yankees had made an announcement on a deal as of Saturday morning. Quantrill, 36, was designated for assignment by the Yankees on Thursday after posting a 6.75 ERA in 22 appearances. May and Redding both have been switching between the bullpen and the No. 5 starter role for the Padres this season. May is 1-3 with a 6.69 ERA in eight starts and 14 relief appearances; Redding is 0-5 with a 9.10 ERA in six starts and three relief appearances. The Padres signed veteran starter Pedro Astacio earlier this week after he'd been released by the Rangers, and he could be activated to make a start as soon as Tuesday. That's when Adam Eaton was projected to come off the disabled list, but the injury to the tendon in his right middle finger hasn't healed sufficiently so the club has pushed his return back at least another five days. The Union-Tribune reported that both May and Redding will report to Triple-A Columbus and that the Padres will send an unspecified amount of cash to the Yankees to complete the trade.
