Craig Hansen signs

Featured Replies

CHICAGO - First-round draft pick Craig Hansen signed a four-year, $4 million major league deal with the Red Sox yesterday, according to industry and club sources.

The Sox are expected to make the deal official today. When asked if Hansen will make his major league debut this season, a club official said ``probably not - no.''

Hansen will report to the Sox' minor league facility in Fort Myers, Fla., this week and begin a workout regimen while the team decides where to place him. Starting his career at Double-A Portland is not out of the question.

The Sox took Hansen with their second pick, 26th overall, in the first round of the June draft. Expected to be a top 10 pick, he slid in large part because a number of clubs did not want to get into protracted negotiations with Hansen's representative, Scott Boras.

The Sox made their first offer to Hansen and his family shortly after the All-Star break, making the negotiations unexpectedly smooth.

Although Hansen would probably have to show remarkable stuff, maturity and poise for the Sox to change their inclination to keep him in the minor leagues this summer, he will likely be given a shot at cracking the major league roster next spring.

The 6-foot-5, 21-year-old from Glen Cove, N.Y., and St. John's University throws a fastball in the high 90s with a good slider. His changeup is not major league ready but most relievers in the majors can get by with just two pitches.

Hansen posted a 3-2 record with 14 saves this year for the Red Storm, registering 85 strikeouts in 64 innings. He was flawless in his senior season at Glen Cove High on Long Island, with an 8-0 record and 0.00 ERA.

I guess Boras got his client a better deal than the Marlins 2.5 million(per yr for 2 or 3), but its about the money :lol

He's from NY. Maybe he wanted to play for one of the northeast powers. Perhaps he didn't care if we offered more money. Not every person in this country likes the Marlins. :whistle

No worries, We will shell him someday anyways.

I find that hard to believe.
