This is why you dont Trade AJ

Phils could swap Wagner for Burnett

July 28

Newark Star-Ledger (scroll down) (registration required): "The Phillies are one of the teams trying to get Baez, and the reason is they believe they can trade closer Billy Wagner for a starting pitcher. Both the Red Sox and White Sox have indicated to Philadelphia they might be interested in sending A.J. Burnett there in exchange for Wagner if they could get Burnett from the Marlins."

The LAST thing we want is AJ within a Phillies Uniform facing him 3-5 times going into August. It would be a disaster to us totally and completely. This is why Beinfest is demanding the roof of prices with him and why even that isnt high enough. Keep him and pick up a relief pitcher then run with it is my opinion.

Another article for it.

Flawed, yes, but difficult to fix

July 28

Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Jim Salisbury (registration required): "The Phils have inquired about every available starting pitcher and have made proposals for several. They've asked about Florida's A.J. Burnett, but the Marlins won't deal him within the division. They've tried to run end arounds to get Burnett in a three-team deal. No dice."

Yes. You can't pass on a good trade that will help us a lot in the long term because Burnett might get traded to one of our rivals who might start him once or twice against us. If we hang on to burnett he is going to be fair game for everyone in to offseason (including all four of the other teams in our division) so hanging on to him would only be delaying the inevitable anyway.

If the Red Sox did aquire Burnett I dont see them trading him. Yes I read the article but I think this is the Phillies talking because the Red Sox know not to trade a 28yr SP for a 33yr CL, especially considering the SP would be signed to a long term deal while the CL would be a rental. Idk about the White Sox, but I think this is just the Philllies thinking they could do that, otherwise a burnett for wagner swap doesnt make sense.

BTW all Sanchez is 35th on BA midseason ratings. Posted them within the minor league area for anyone interested.

wait - you guys are scared of the Phillies???? if we get a good deal out of this, i laugh at the phillies if they trade Wagner for AJ. Great - they get AJ and all of his 7-8 more starts this season. But they lose Wagner in the process, and even if they kept Wagner they'd still be a 2nd-rate team with no real shot at the postseason.

this should not be a dealbreaker.

and for all you other non-sanchez believers, heres his line from today in AA: 6innings, 4hits, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 Ks, giving him an ERA of 1.31 in AA

The only reason you don't trade A.J. is if you can't get the package of players that you want.
