July 31, 200521 yr Went to Dwyer Stadium in Batavia once again to view the Jammers/Muck Dogs game, and it felt like deja vu. Once again, Jamestown fell short 4-3, but they had plenty of chances. It was frustrating to watch their lack of patience at the plate- all of the strikeouts were swinging, and most of the strike 3's were in the dirt. (Here is my report from last time I ventured out: http://www.marlinbaseball.com/forums/index...howtopic=45270). Lineup and notes: 1. CF Greg Burns: 0-3, 2 K's, 2 BB's, 1 SB. He led off the game walking on four pitches, then stole second. 2. 2B Gary Roche: 2-5, 1 run scored. Roche lined into a double play in the first. He attempted to reach on a bunt (unsuccessfully) in the 4th, but executed a nice hit-and-run in the 6th. 3. DH Kris Harvey: 0-4, 1 run scored, 1 strikeout (bad at-bat). He reached on an error in the 8th. By the looks of him, he could stand to put on a few pounds. 4. RF Jeff Van Houten: 1-3, 1 strikeout, 1 sacrifice. With a man on first and second and no outs in the 8th, he laid down a sacrifice. I understand playing small ball, but with your number 4 hitter? They were down 4-2 at this point. 5. 1B Mark Aranda: 1-3, 2 RBI, 1 SF. Aranda made two web gems; one on a line drive, and one catching a foul ball- it was on the first base side near the dugout, the catcher never even took off his mask because he didn't see it, so Aranda came all the way over to make the play. He also hit a towering shot that was just foul in his first at-bat. Woulda been a home run. 6. 3B Gaby Sanchez: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 SB. In the 5th, Sanchez was gunned down at the plate, trying to score from 2nd on a Brett Hayes base hit. His stolen base was on a strikeout of the batter. Sanchez was also charged with an error on a tough play where he was trying to field a bunt the pitcher should've gotten to. 7. LF Jamar Walton: 1-4, 2 K's. Walton was out at 2nd trying to stretch a single into a double, and did not look good overall at the plate. 8. C Brett Hayes: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 CS. In the 9th, down 4-3, Hayes led off the inning with a walk. He was then caught-stealing on a fake bunt by Paul Witt. Why would the catcher be stealing with no outs in the 9th? Had a costly passed ball that went right between his legs, allowing the third run to score. 9. SS Paul Witt: 2-4, 1 run scored, 2 K's. Pitchers: Jacob Marceaux: 6 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO, 1 WP. He had good offspeed stuff, but that's about it. He was very hittable, and I'm not sure he had a 1-2-3 inning. He hit the first batter of the inning with the first pitch of the inning TWICE. That CAN'T be good. He got out of jams early, but didn't late. I thought he was left in and inning or so too long. His wild pitch led to the 2nd run for Batavia. He has a long stride when he pitches. Adam Wood: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K. A diminutive lefty, Wood pitches with a bit of a herky-jerky motion and comes from a 3/4 arm angle. He looked impressive- could have a future in the bullpen. Overall, another fun time- could've been more fun if Jamestown had won, but ya can't win'em all.
August 1, 200521 yr Thanks for the report, Mr. G. Any impressions on Mordy's managing style? Do you see him adapting well to the new role?
August 1, 200521 yr Author Thanks for the report, Mr. G. Any impressions on Mordy's managing style? Do you see him adapting well to the new role? 883277[/snapback] I've only seen two games so it's tough to say.....but his guys seem agressive on the basepaths (he's been the 3rd base coach in the games I've seen as well), and they seem to be playing a bit of smallball too (which isn't suprising at this level).
August 2, 200521 yr Although I think it's best (all-around) for Mordy to get this Managing experience, I'd like to see him coaching 3B for the Marlins right now.
