October 3, 200521 yr Dontrelle: 22-10, 2.63 ERA, 236.1 IP, 55BB, 170K Brown: 17-11, 1.89 ERA, 233.0 IP, 33BB, 159K Both great seasons, who's #1?
October 3, 200521 yr Having seen both of them, I can't even vote, I give it a tie. Both times, when they took the hill, it just felt like a win. 3 runs, and you win...that simple. It's a shame that Brown had to go up against John Smoltz that year for the Cy Young, hopefully the same won't be said for Willis when the awards are handed out.
October 3, 200521 yr No disrespect to Willis, but how many times in the modern era has there been a pitcher with a sub-2 ERA? Hell, that's the only reason statwise that Roger Clemens is even in the Cy Young race.
October 3, 200521 yr gotta go with Brown....he was absoulty dominant , no disrespect to willis though, he isnt a distant 2nd
October 3, 200521 yr I personally think Dontrelle's 2005 season was more fun to watch (mostly because D-Train is more fun to watch than Brown), but Kevin Brown's 1996 season was absurd. He's got my vote.
October 3, 200521 yr Author i'm having a lot of trouble with this one, which is why i posted it - usually i take ERA over wins straight-up, but considering that the 1996 and 2005 marlins were both ~80-win teams, having 5 more wins is pretty significant (much different than KB losing the Cy to Smoltz, who got 23 or whatever wins but on a much stronger team). i think the energy dontrelle brings to the game - not to mention his bat - causes everyone to play better. that said, as a pure pitcher you can't beat a 1.89 ERA so i give a slight nod to brown.
October 3, 200521 yr An ERA under 2? Twenty-two less walks in only 2.1 less IP? Kevin Brown, by a lot.
October 3, 200521 yr The real difference was the consistency of Brown. Dontrelle had a sub-2 ERA for much of the season. Had he not had a bad July he probably would still have a sub-2 ERA. Brown wins on pitching consistency, but Dontrelle has more wins because he often helps generate the offense necessary to get the W. Tough one really, but I'm going with Dontrelle due to his all around contribution to the game.
