October 14, 200520 yr I am curious if anyone has an RX8 and has had another problems with the car and dealerships? I am interested in perhaps purchasing one and I have been trying to find reviews for and against the car and individuals that have car and might of had some problems with it. I have read before that sometimes the rotary engine can flood and some other problems can come about. I would be greatful for any help I could get. I wanna make sure I get the right car before dropping a large amount of cash on a new car.
October 14, 200520 yr Three major problems with the RX8: 1. This engine DOES need to be warmed up for about 5 minutes before it is shut off or it will flood. I'm not really sure what that is about, but you will probably be told about that by your dealer. 2. Rotary engines, by their very nature, have to be extremely well maintained because there is a ton of friction. Failure to perform routine oil changes at regular [and early] intervals using full synthetics = big trouble. These things *do* burn oil by design so be ready to top it off at LEAST once a month. One of my friends had to replace his engine with less than 30k miles on it... :confused 3. The fuel mileage is BAD [14 City/20 Hwy]. I should also add that the engine torque is really low on this car [again, by design] so you have to approach redline to get any real power out of it. The driver's seat on my friend's car was pretty warn in less than two years so that could be an issue too. Also, don't forget that this is a REAER WHEEL DRIVE car. This can be problematic if you live in one of the wetter areas of Florida since snow is obviously not an issue for you. Oh yeah, also plan on replacing the tires every 15-20K miles. They are low profile and treadwear is less than stellar. It'll cost you about $1,200 every time you do it. Final note: I just read that JD Power rated this a 2 out of 5 stars in overall quality. :plain
October 14, 200520 yr Author I wonder why car and driver keep giving it top 10 ratings. Thank you for the assistance and advice. That is a killer problem it sounds with the rotatry. It sounds like alot of folks are having that problem too. Hmm I am not sure what else to buy then as I had a list of a few cars and it seems they all have some problem with them. LOL

October 14, 200520 yr Author actually I can get one new right now (2005) for 18,999 at lou bachro mazda. That would be brand new. They have a special going, talked to a dealer and they had a red and blue ones there ( the colors I liked the best) That is why I was suprised normally it is a car far out of my price range. This was the cars I was considering for myself scion tc (since fully decked out msrp is 17,200) ford mustang GT Ford mustang (convertable 6) Ponitac solistce (beautiful car and I really wanted one but they going 5k over msrp down here right now and hard to aquire at that) new civic SI mazda RX8 acura RSX Also for the first problem listed above, of turning off quickling causing problems for the engine flooding over. Wouldnt that be solved with a turbo timer? Any recommendations of cars I would always gladly take I have been trying to decide for a while now what to pick up. I have test driven all of the cars above.
October 14, 200520 yr I think a turbo timer would work in that situation as far as my knowledge goes. Anyway, that's a great freaking deal for a brand new RX-8. I'm sort of in the market for a new car and if they have RX-8s for $18,000, I'd be all over it. Any idea on the trim level/transmission/options that are at that price?
October 15, 200520 yr Author 18,999 is the price they listed on their website for this weekend is a special for it seems. Auto, power package, air, basics really, 16 inch wheels instead of the 18s. It is the lower volume version. But, still a solid car really. If I get it, will demand a turbo timer on it.
