Palm Beach County Schools

Featured Replies

I received a phone call from Art Johnson earlier.......Palm Beach County schools are closed Tuesday and Wednesday. The problems are 1) No power to 38 schools, 2) 700 traffic lights out, 3) Not all debris has been cleared from school grounds yet.

PBC is going to make up the lost days by cancelling planned holidays and having school on planned teacher workdays. Upcoming holidays that will be skipped are Veteran's Day, the day before Thanksgiving, 1/3-1/6/06, and President's Day. Days may be added to the end of the school year if needed.

That is absolutely disgusting.

Art Johnson needs to be slapped.

You gotta be joking...oooohhh no the kids have school on Veteran's Day. Dispicable. Fire the man right now. Far from it. They just what will probably be 10 days off. No need to go back for 4 more and then get another day off.

You guys normally get the day before Thanksgiving off? We just get the Thursday and Friday. They can make school on that Friday, but nobody is going to show up.

Kids may not show up on the day before Thankgiving either if they already have travel plans.

Hurricane Wilma Announcement # 10 - 11/1/05

Palm Beach County Schools Remain Closed On Wednesday. School Police Help Out At Intersections.

Status of Schools:

151 schools of the 172 HAVE power; 21 DO NOT HAVE POWER.

10 of the 21 schools w/out power have contingency plans: portable generators will be used or students will be moved to receiving schools.

All after school, lease, music and athletic activities are canceled.

The predetermined emergency make up days are listed in the District calendar and on the Web site.

The problems preventing reopening:

11 schools with no power or contingency plans is too many to open.

Traffic lights are still a MAJOR problem, slowing traffic, delaying busses and creating unsafe situations.

Debris removal is not complete, slowing busses and cars and making some unsafe situations for students.

School reopening would put at least 90,000 additional cars on the roads, further slowing traffic and adding to unsafe intersections with many traffic lights still out.

Solutions:

FPL says more schools will be on by end of day today.

Beginning this evening, 52 School Police officers will be directing traffic at 16 intersections throughout the county to assist the Sheriff's department under an existing mutual aid agreement.

The next update regarding reopening of school will be provided after 2 p.m. Wednesday. For further updates, parents and employees should monitor the local media, this Web site (www.palmbeachschools.org), and the hotlline (561) 357-7500 or (866) 930-6001 toll free from South county and the Glades.

Veterans Day isnt a major holiday, at least not in the world of schools. The only days you really cannot cut are Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Memorial Day, Labor Day.

Any other day is pretty much fair game by and large.

Palm Beach County Schools are scheduled to reopen on Monday.

Hurricane Wilma Announcement # 12 - 11/2/05

All Palm Beach County Public Schools Will Reopen On Monday, November 7, 2005. PBC public schools will remain closed for the remainder of this week because of the lack of power to some schools and unsafe conditions resulting from Hurricane Wilma. All school-based staff may return to their schools on Friday, with the approval of their Principals, to prepare for Monday's reopening.

As of 2 p.m. today, 14 schools still do not have electrical power. Eight hundred and fifty two (852) traffic signals (63%) countywide are still not working, up to half of all railroad crossings are not working and debris continues to block access to schools and walking paths for students. Generators will be used at three schools in Lake Worth until power is fully restored. Bus routes were tested today in all areas of the county, and bus drivers reported that they were running up to five hours, double the normal time, to drive their routes. Those times are without the additional 90,000 parent and school vehicles that will be on the roads when schools reopen, adding to travel times.
