November 2, 200520 yr Get a veteran to be the #3 starter. I'm thinking someone like Joe Mays, Jose Lima, Tony Armas Jr. or even Kevin Brown. Shop Mike Lowell, but it's unlikely anyone will take his salary. Re-sign Alfonseca, make offers to Urbina and Looper, and see where the market shapes up for B.J. Ryan reminding him we'd let him be our closer, since it seems most big-market teams are looking at him as a super-lefty set-up...keep an eye on Scott Eyre, but I don't think the Giants let him get away. Go long term with Beckett, leave Willis and Cabrera for next off-season. Do something to get sock in the lineup, but short of taking a risk on Nomar (which I'd like to see, but I can understand why we shouldn't do) Gonzalez may be the best option if he decides to take a one or two year deal. This is assuming Lowell's un-movable and will be our opening day third-baseman. Names I'd like to see us linked with: Nomar, Ryan, Wickman, Mesa, Eyre, Armas JR., Milwood, Washburn, Gordon, Farnsworth, Seanez, Brian Giles, Sheffield. It's more than likely we'll do a whole lot of nothing this offseason, so I'm not getting my hopes up.
November 3, 200520 yr Nice summary. I agree finding a #3 starter and revamping the bullpen should be our top priorities. I'm hopeful a more effective hitting coach and younger manager can turn this lackluster offense around. The talent is there, we just need some leadership to bring it out.

Well, we're going to have to give up some of our promising young players to get a meaningful impact bat, and we're probably going to have to absorb some (if not a majority) of Lowell's deal to get him out of town. It really depends what you deem "competitive," if it's hovering around .500 or if it's finishing with a winning record and either winning the division or finishing a game out. Barring a trade of Manny into the division, the most significant move for the NL East this offseason is the departure of Mazzone, that alone is enough to make any team think they can "win it." Also, it depends on how much you want to attribute to off years for Pierre, Lowell, Gonzalez and LoDuca or if you want to attribute it to predictable old-age decline or whatever other things (IE, drug testing) you want to cite as the reason for decline. There isn't really a reason for me to think we'll be a whole lot better, but we can't do much worse either...

Braves are going to have to cut payroll due to AOL restraints, they're going to have holes in the rotation and bullpen, but I will never, ever, doubt them as long as Cox and Scheurholz are there, but losing Leo is going to be big for them. The Nats are the Nats, and by the time the ownership situation is resolved, they figure to have lost out on a lot of the free-agent period, not to mention, Bowden's going to hand out more bad long-term contracts for tools guys (I can already see the 3 year $21 million for Encarnacion), meaning that even if a new owner comes in with gobs of money to spend, it's not going to be a great situation right off the bat. The Mets and Phillies are the wild-cards here, the money the Mets have scares me, but even if the Mets have their offseason come up aces, they'd simply replace the Phillies as our primary competition to dethrone the Braves, plus Pedro's health is going to be an issue for next season given the way his '05 ended. Losing Wagner is going to hurt the Phillies more than it's going to help the Mets (given that a strikeout reliever is much more needed in a ballpark like Philly than Shea). So I figure that barring drastic shakeups, we're going to be in the playoff picture.
November 3, 200520 yr How about what I think this club will do? - Re-sign Jeff Conine and Alfredo Alfonseca. - _Attempt_ to trade Mike Lowell. - Avoid signing any free agent before the arbitration deadline, therefore causing two-thirds of the board to freak out - Not blink Gonzalez and let him go if he won't assign to a short deal. - Sign veteran _reserve_ options at places rookies are bidding for positions. - Sign its fair share of AAA players. - Sign or trade for a fan favorite, a former Marlin and/or popular latin player.

Maybe he can fund this team a new stadium. :banghead DUMBEST THING EVER SAID ON MARLINSBASEBALL.COM unless theres another george steinbrenner i havent heard of in the 12 years ive watched baseball. id like to see beinfest work his magic and get rid of delgado and pull something off that everyone on this site would be like OMG to...and i think itll happen to. i dont wanna see JP go and i dont wanna see nomar in a marlins uniform next year. lowell will be fine, its just called a "off season". id love to see a decent number 3 starter come through here but i dont think itll happen without a trade. oh and to have a lefty in the bullpen for once is probablly asking alot, but i want that too. and im sorry to add to this, and this has nothing to do with the marlins but i would pay thousands of dollars to see Frank Robinson go to the hill and back to the dugout in under 15 minutes.
