November 8, 200520 yr Seriously? I have never been real knowledgeable about the NFL pre-1985 or so. I know Joe Montana was exceptional, as was Steve Young. I know that Bret Favre (used to be) such a field leader and really could control a game. And of course Dan Marino was a better pure passer than all of them. I think Manning is up there with all of them, perhaps better than a couple of those mentioned. He's smart. He knows what to do in every situation. Plus he just can throw the ball nearly flawlessly. Maybe it's the people around him, I don't know. Montana and Young had Rice. Marino had some great targets in his day, not all the time, but for the most part. Favre always had some solid targets too. The only knock on him is those playoff slumps in Foxboro. How much weight do those have?
November 8, 200520 yr I would honestly argue that he excels in all categories but one... He gets frustrated easily and when the Colts are down he's mistake prone. Other than that, if continues down this track, he could be one of the greats, spoken in the same breath as Montana. But he's still got a lot of time left.
November 8, 200520 yr The only knock on him is those playoff slumps in Foxboro. How much weight do those have? You know, those are overblown and adds to the dramatic element to the game tonight... But one Superbowl and all that is forgotten.
November 8, 200520 yr One could argue he's the product of the pieces around him, but he isn't average or above average with Harrison, he's amazing. Right now, I'd take him over any QB in the league, but I'm not quite sure how he stacks up against the all-time greats.
November 8, 200520 yr He is still the second best quarterback in his conference. Steve McNair? David Carr? Byron Leftwich? Billy Volek?

November 8, 200520 yr Author He is still the second best quarterback in his conference. Steve McNair? David Carr? Byron Leftwich? Billy Volek? *conference not division. I see what JJ is saying. Although I don't know, that's a tough one. I absolutely love Tom Brady, but man, I just sit in awe watching Manning everytime I see him.

I just figure Brady never has had a stud wide reciever like all the greats have had and before last year, never had a big time back to keep defenses really honest.
