ESPN Classic Piece

Featured Replies

I was flipping through the channels and came across Classic Cuts or something like that right as they were starting a piece on the marlins

they recounted the early support, the 97 championship and firesale - the 98 season and rebuild into the 2003 series and current firesale and stadium situation

then they did a q&a piece with lebatard and kirkjian

TK stated that the marlins were doing better with this firesale than the last ... both gave credit to the organization for keeping the team together and trying to build a consistent product

lebatard defended loria and his spending on the club ... both stated that although you could argue that he knew what he was getting into, that it really is inprecendented to win a WS and then be in the race the next 2 season and not get out of the bottom 5 in attendance

lebatard also said that a stadium is very necessary for the success of florida baseball and that miami really isn't a great market as it is ... people will make excuses to not attend games and the revenue streams just aren't there

TK restated that he firmly believes that the marlins will move if there isn't a stadium, the main problem now is that there isn't many viable stadium options elsewhere ..... he stated that if vegas currently had a stadium the marlins would be gone within 2 years

most of the stuff was info that we already knew, but it was a good discussion anyhow ... i'm traditionally not a fan of lebatard, but i thought he was spot on last night

Yes, I saw the segment as well. I too was pleasantly surprised at how LeBatard handled himself. I thought he made a lot of very sound points.

Wouldn't it be nice if someone in the media made it their goal to keep the Marlins in South Florida?

I've had it with Fat Hank, Mandich, etc.
