Huizenga offers to help build ballpark

MIAMI -- As Marlins officials were meeting Tuesday with officials from San Antonio about the prospect of relocating, some Miami-Dade County officials held out hope they might be able to keep the Marlins in South Florida, perhaps in a new ballpark near Dolphins Stadium.

Dolphins owner H. Wayne Huizenga has offered 15 acres near Dolphins Stadium, which he also owns, and about $50 million toward a stadium for the Marlins, sources said. But the Marlins and Miami-Dade County, whose participation would be needed to complete a deal, have not reached a deal with Huizenga.

The Marlins have a lease at Dolphins Stadium, but receive only percentages of concessions, parking and advertising signage at the stadium, where they are expected to play through at least the 2007 season. The team's lease runs out after the 2010 season and the team has vowed to move by the 2011 season.

Miami-Dade County Manager George Burgess said he has had meetings with Huizenga's representatives and talks with Marlins President David Samson regularly. But while Burgess said, "It's not over," he didn't characterize Huizenga's offer as anything close to a completed deal.

"They have not laid anything specific on the table," Burgess said. "There might be a circumstance where they may be willing to participate to a certain level."

Huizenga representatives declined comment.

But County Commissioner Rebeca Sosa said she hoped Burgess would fully investigate Huizenga's proposal and any other options that might remain for the Marlins in Miami-Dade County.

Last month, the Marlins received permission from Major League Baseball to seek relocation outside Florida, after talks with the city of Miami to build a retractable roof stadium next to the Orange Bowl broke down.

Marlins officials attending Baseball's Winter meetings in Dallas were to meet with officials in San Antonio Tuesday afternoon.

Why does it always seem that George Burgess is the only one trying to get all the parties to work together?

Gotta love the Marlins indifference to this whole thing.

Amazing, isn't it? They can continue to say Miami is their first choice all they want, but in reality they want no part of South Florida anymore and are not willing to budge not matter what offer is given to them here.
