December 16, 200520 yr Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals indicates that whites constitute 36.6 percent of the storm's fatalities in the city. 658 bodies have been identified. Forty-seven percent were African-American and 42 percent were Caucasian. The remaining bodies were either non-black minorities or undetermined. http://www.cnsnews.com/ViewNation.asp?Page...T20051214b.html 42% > 47%? 58% of the dead are minorities 42% are white.
December 16, 200520 yr George W. Bush 1, Kanye West 0 :lol :lol You crack me up. Latinos in So. Florida don't know how good they have it until they have to deal with the rednecks and other racists in other parts of the country. Of course, what Kanye West said was absurd. But if you think this article proves that the federal, state, and local governments didn't mess up during Katrina you're not thinking clearly. My statement gave absolutely no opinion on the matter whatsoever. I didn't criticize blacks for trumping up their city being destroyed, I didn't criticize whites for ignoring Louisiana, I didn't criticize the President for not putting the right people in place to take care of this, didn't take a jab at FEMA for doing a horrendous job, nor did I attack the state of Louisiana for not being prepared ahead of time. My post was completely satirical in nature. However, congratulations on exposing your bigotry once and for all to the world. It's pretty sad that you can't take the fact that you lost one argument over in another side of the board pretty handidly, instead choosing to go around criticizing posts I make maybe hoping for the odd chance that I might slip and you can try to soak it up. Keep it up though, the post stalking doesn't bother me. December 16, 200520 yr 58% of the dead are minorities 42% are white. The topic of the thread is "Less Than Half Of The Victims of Katrina Were Black." 50% > 47% What is there not to get here? African-Americans make up 67.25 percent of the population and 59.1 percent of the deceased. Other minorities constitute approximately 5 percent of the population and represented 4.3 percent of the storm's fatalities. The article saying that blacks make up more than 50% of the population of the affected area and more than 50% of the dead would lead me to believe that more than 50% of the victims were african america.
December 16, 200520 yr But the state's demographic information suggests that whites in New Orleans died at a higher rate than minorities. According to the 2000 census, whites make up 28 percent of the city's population, but the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals indicates that whites constitute 36.6 percent of the storm's fatalities in the city. African-Americans make up 67.25 percent of the population and 59.1 percent of the deceased. Other minorities constitute approximately 5 percent of the population and represented 4.3 percent of the storm's fatalities. Overall for the state, 658 bodies have been identified. Forty-seven percent were African-American and 42 percent were Caucasian. The remaining bodies were either non-black minorities or undetermined. Yeah, but you've got two pretty contradictory statements there. One claims 67.25%, other claims 47%. Unless they were talking strictly on terms of bodies identified (which seems to be the context of the sentence but really wouldn't make sense when put in the context of the entire article) than they have two different numbers for the same exact thing back to back. Much ado about nothing until we get a clear statistic on it all.
December 16, 200520 yr I want to know about that 1% they couldn't determine the gender of. They found more than 100 bodies, so that's more than one person they couldn't tell the gender of! But the state's demographic information suggests that whites in New Orleans died at a higher rate than minorities. Much ado about nothing until we get a clear statistic on it all. 67% is the proportion of blacks in New Orleans. 59% is the proportion of black deaths in New Orleans. What's missing is the black proportion of state population. The 47/42 numbers are state-wide numbers not New Orleans specific.

Much ado about nothing until we get a clear statistic on it all. One is talking about inside NOLA the other is talking about the entire state overall. It's called reading comprehension my friend. The article is saying inside NOLA: Blacks = 67.25 of the population, and 59.1% of the dead are black. Overall NOLA minorities are 72.25% of the population and 63.4% of the dead. In the entire state of La: 47% of the dead are black, 42% are white meaning 58% of the dead are minority in the entire state. And I highly doubt La. is made up of 58% minorities, so if anything statewide minorities died at a higher rate than whites.
December 16, 200520 yr Yeah, see if you read "bodies have been identified" and then continue the statement, anything passed a 5th grade education teaches you that the gate is completely open to there being more bodies than that unavailable to the statistics at the moment. The final numbers could turn out completely different because in that statement they don't specify the percentage of bodies counted. So, therefore, it's not a lack of reading comprehension but rather an open-ended sentence that leads to the confusion on my part. And, by the way, I still want to know how the title of the thread is wrong. Minus the slight grammatical mistake, of course.
December 16, 200520 yr And, by the way, I still want to know how the title of the thread is wrong. Minus the slight grammatical mistake, of course. You want to consider dying the definition of victim? Yes or no? Also why not name the thread "Less than half of the Victims of Katrina were White"? That is true. Or even "The majority of Katrina victims were minorities" because that's true too. in that statement they don't specify the percentage of bodies counted. Really? They say they have counted 658 bodies for the demographics and there are 247 bodies left to id. Now using second grade math you can determine that simple percentage. 658/(658+247) = 658/905 = about 72.8% of the victims have been counted. Sorry you didn't understand simple addition and division to make up the percentage for yourself. :thumbup
December 16, 200520 yr State wide minorities make up about 36% of La.'s population according to the 2000 census. Yet 58% of the dead in the state are minorities that is a little out of whack if you ask me. State wide blacks make up 32.4% of the population yet state wide 47% of the dead are black. That means they are dying at a higher rate than they should. Is it shocking that blacks make up less than 50% of the dead? Not really they make up less than 1/3 of the population.

Keep it up though, the post stalking doesn't bother me. I disagreed with you once. I don't recall disagreeing with you besides that one issue. It's not about losing an argument. You and I disagreed on the one particular argument I am thinking of. There is no right or wrong answer. Both positions can be argued reasonably. But yes, I did jump to conclusions on this one. I agree with you. But I don't understand why you would say I exposed my bigotry. I'm a Latin guy from So. Florida. How can be a bigot to a demographic group I belong to?
December 16, 200520 yr And, by the way, I still want to know how the title of the thread is wrong. Minus the slight grammatical mistake, of course. You want to consider dying the definition of victim? Yes or no? Also why not name the thread "Less than half of the Victims of Katrina were White"? That is true. Or even "The majority of Katrina victims were minorities" because that's true too.I'm pretty sure JJ meant victims as a synonym for those who were killed by the storm. Considering his background, he has no reason to misrepresent the truth of the matter. He was using the word victim as death, which is what the article focuses on. in that statement they don't specify the percentage of bodies counted. Really? They say they have counted 658 bodies for the demographics and there are 247 bodies left to id. Now using second grade math you can determine that simple percentage. 658/(658+247) = 658/905 = about 72.8% of the victims have been counted. Forty-seven percent were African-American and 42 percent were Caucasian. The remaining bodies were either non-black minorities or undetermined. An additional 247 victims have not been identified, so their demographic information has not been released. So, basically, the part you quoted from me isn't wrong at all. The first bolded statement presents the number of bodies that have been identified. The second bolded statement, which is two sentences away and is a completely separate statement, specifies how many bodies are left to count. Two different statements. Carefully read my wording next time before trying to jump and make yourself look cool. And prinmemito, I won't fly to call you a bigot if you don't fly to make it very easy to do it :thumbup Nothing more to say about a misunderstanding.
