Maybe in terms of the president looking stupid, but c'mon. 1) If Buchanan prevents Southern secession, that only delays the process - and makes it a lot more likely that the CSA would have been somewhat more organized and may have come out on top of the Civil War, had it taken place later, with a longer period of anticipation. 3) Containment. You want United States foreign policy taken seriously? Don't waver when following through with what you say. 6) Had the War of 1812 not occured, U.S. sovereignty, though official, would have taken decades more to be regarded and respected throughout the Globe. What's so bad about a small war in which we gained so much? As far as #10, whether you believe it or not, and as foxy and sexy as Bill Clinton was - he made a total ass out of himself as a man and made our nation's executive branch a joke across the world.

There sure as hell arent only 9 that were detremential. Do they name these historians?

Buchanan was one of our worst presidents and could have done so much more but you in no ways could put this solely on him. Every president from Jackson on, didn't do enough to stop the war, so you might as well put all of them on the list. Buchanan sucked(and if the rumors are correct, he sucked in more ways than one :shifty :mischief ), but the reason listed above is only part of it and should not be listed. This country was going to war, the secons the likes of Clay, and Webster died and there was no one there to put another temporary bandage on the every growing wound.

Pissing off the south was due in large to the South having an entirely different lifestyle than the North. And ultimately it all comes down to the man ultimately in charge. I still love the South's attitude toward that war. It makes me laugh.
