We have 52 movies that were nominated in more than one genre - Phase 2 of the list is picking which movies belong in which genre. Please feel free to post your opinion on why one movie is one genre over another, and please don't vote for each movie more than once. If you do, you really need to find a hobby.

 

This will be open until sometime Friday night. If any movie for some strange reason is tied between two or more genres, I'll just undemocratically choose the one I believe fits best.

Crime is sort of a tough one... If Crime is going to be a separate genre there are a ton of movies that could go both in there or in drama. A lot of them I instictively think drama, but then I'm not sure where to draw the line. Like I would put Requiem in Drama, but something like LA Confidential would have to be crime... Godfather I guess would have to be crime then.

 

Meanwhile Fargo is even tougher.

Alright, on what planet is Spinal Tap considered a musical more than a comedy? You people are insane.

hmm... guilty here. Mockumentary would be much closer to comedy, agreed. Can I switch my vote to Comedy?

I don't personally know how Phantom of the Opera can be overwhelmingly music over romance, yet Dirty Dancing is getting a neck and neck race. Huh?

 

The way I think about Crime is whether or not the movie focused on the crime, or if it just was the catalyst for the story instead of the central issue. A movie like Goodfellas clearly centers on crime as its main issue, but The Godfather isn't so much about the crimes being committed. It could go either way, but I went with Drama.

I'm starting to think no one on this board has seen Spinal Tap (except maybe Hotcorner). If Spinal Tap were a musical, it would be one of the worst musicals ever made. As a comedy, it's one of the best ever made.

 

Whatever. I don't know why I even care. It's just really odd to see everyone voting for musical.

The overwhelming majority of the movie is centered around music, to me that makes it a musical. It doesn't have to be something like The Sound of Music to be considered a musical.

 

Yes, I have seen the film.

It is a musical, sort of, but it is much more a comedy. That's all I'm saying.

I sided with Spinal Tap being a comedy. It's more about the laughs than the music.

I don't care how the voting is, Fargo is a black comedy through and through. There's no doubt about it. The only way you wouldn't consider it a comedy is if you, *starts to sound like a movie snob*, "don't get it".
