April 10, 200620 yr From MLB.com: Tuesday, April 11 Woody Williams, RHP (0-0, 0.00) @ Sergio Mitre, RHP (1-0, 0.00) Scouting Report: Bounced from the rotation to start the season, Williams, after pitching an inning of scoreless relief against the Giants, moves back into a starting role with Shawn Estes on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left elbow. Williams lost his only start against the Marlins last season, giving up six earned runs in five innings. He's 1-1 with a 5.49 ERA in three starts at Dolphins Stadium. If he's getting ahead of hitters, Williams has the stuff and expertise to win games. Starting off the season on a high, Mitre tossed six scoreless innings in a victory at Houston on Tuesday. The right-hander scattered three hits and struck out five in a strong showing. He showed some power at the plate too, adding an RBI double. Mitre is 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA against the Padres. Wednesday, April 12 Chris Young, RHP (0-0, 6.75) @ Brian Moehler, RHP (0-1, 27.00) Scouting Report: The 6-foot-10 right-hander makes his first career appearance at Turner Field. Young had a successful start against the Braves last season as a Ranger in Texas, shutting them out for seven innings for a victory. Young will rely on his fastball and a developing assortment of off-speed stuff. Rocked for six runs on six hits in two innings in his first start of the season, Moehler looks to bounce back in Florida's home opener. Moehler threw 31 pitches in his loss last Wednesday at Houston, surrendering a pair of two-run home runs. The 34-year-old has faced the Padres just once in his career, without logging a decision. Thursday, April 13 Dewon Brazelton, RHP (0-1, 34.71) @ Jason Vargas, LHP (0-1, 9.00) Scouting Report: Coming off a disappointing Padres debut against the Rockies, who hammered him for 11 hits and nine earned runs in 2 1/3 innings, Brazelton hopes to right himself back in Florida against the Marlins. The former Tampa Bay No. 1 pick gets by on control and sinking action on his fastball, with a deadly changeup. When he's got everything working, he can rack up zeros. In his first start, the left-hander had a tough time at Shea Stadium. Vargas gave up five runs on eight hits in a loss to the Mets, including a towering home run to David Wright. He threw 94 pitches. A native of Apple Valley, Calif., Vargas faces the Padres for the second time. As a rookie last year, Vargas suffered a loss, giving up three runs in 5 1/3 innings.
April 10, 200620 yr Author Living down here in San Diego, the Padres aren't talked about a lot unless they're doing good. I swear, this is the worst possible town for baseball. I do, however like the look of Woody Williams back in the starting rotation this season after Shawn Estes got hurt. He's 1-1 with a 5.49 ERA in three starts at Dolphins Stadium but lost his only start at Joe Robbie (yes I still call it Joe Robbie). He was 9-12 last season with a 4.85 ERA. I hate to be a negative optimist but I'm pretty sure this game against the Marlins will be getting him his first win (as a starter) at Joe Robbie and his first win this season.
