Chad Johnson signs contract extension

The Bengals have signed WR Chad Johnson to a new contract, extending his agreement with the club through the 2011 season. Johnson previously had been signed through 2009.

?This is a key development for our team,? said Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis. ?It further secures our future with one of our top players, in the prime of his career, and I want to commend Chad for his efforts in making it happen. He is showing his commitment to what we have going here.?

The deal, according to Len Pasquarelli of ESPN.com, becomes six years with a total value of $35.5 million. Under his existing contract, Johnson would have earned $5.75 million in 2006-2007 and the base salaries due him through 2009 totaled $12.15 million. The new contract will pay Johnson $16 million between this season and 2007 and, assuming the Bengals exercise the option for 2011, a total of $35.5 million, wrote Pasquarelli.

Johnson has played all five of his past NFL seasons with Cincinnati, and last year, he helped the Bengals to the AFC North Division championship with AFC-leading totals in receptions (97) and receiving yards (1432). His yardage total broke his own Bengals season record, and his catch total was his career high. He was named to a first-team berth on the elite Associated Press All-Pro team, which includes players from both the NFC and AFC. Johnson has played in the last three Pro Bowls, and he has led the AFC in receiving yards for three consecutive years. He has teamed the last two seasons with QB Carson Palmer, who late last year signed a new Bengals contract running through 2014.

With six seasons now remaining on his Bengals contract, Johnson already has career totals of 379 receptions for 5556 yards (14.7 avg.) and 34 touchdowns. He ranks fifth all-time on the Bengals in receptions, but enters 2006 just 38 catches short of the No. 2 spot. He ranks sixth in all-time Bengals receiving yards.
