if someone for example was injured and was going to be unable to play for 13 games lets say...so the fish would naturally put him on the DL. but why wouldn't they just send him to the minors and he could sit on the bench in AAA for the 13 games. then they could just call him back up when he's ready to play.

Well, for one, AAA has roster constraints as well so it would be a waste of space.

Secondly, after a player runs out of options, to outright them to AAA or AA or A requires putting a player on waivers, meaning any other team can take him as long as they're willing to pay his contract.

Finally, putting a guy on the 15 day DL is more beneficial to a team as a roster space is cleared on the 25 man without risking losing a player on the waiver wire, and the 60 day DL actually gives a space on the 40 man which is prety precious.

okay thanks..

Well all the basics were covered forgot to add it would just be crazy to send a player to ride the bench in the minors...think of it this way if he isn't healthy to play in the majors he is gonna be healthy to play in the minors. plus he is gonna be sitting on the bench there...that is what the DL does is give him a chance to sit on the bench in the majors and have a player come in and cover his spot on the roster so the team doesn't suffer
