Hello. I'd just like to take a minute or two here to say a few things. At one time I posted on this board and in this forum often. Things became busy in my life so I unfortuantely had to give up posting on a regular basis. I have tried to return, but each time, things keep piling up on my plate, which is all unfortunate.

But that is not why I am posting. I look at this forum and what was once a wonderful place full of ideas and great debate, this has evolved or I should say devolved into nothing more than a tabloid forum and a place to regurgitate what is said in an article.

This place needs to return to its roots, it needs to return to a place of great thought, of great debate. I am not one for moderation, I should know I moderated here once before and I essentially let everything go in here. But I implore the moderation team in place now to stifle the garbage, close those topics, delete those topics, do something to promote the exchange of thought. I know it goes against a free exchange of ideas, but anyone can read something off of CNN or FoxNews. If you are going to post an article, give me something to generate discussion. I know I used to post articles often, however I always tried to stimulate some type of conversation as a result, sometimes successful, sometimes not so much.

I say this as a formerly active member here, let us get this place back to its roots and make it a great place to goto and exchange thought and not something you have to dredge though the garbage.

Thank you.

The articles aren't garbage, the posts are.

A lot of times the articles are a starting point for discussion. For example, the article on the mayor who attacked the idea of affordable housing mandated by government by insulting poor people could have lead to a discussion on whether or not it is the governments role to mandate affordable housing. We've had discussions on the NSA actions too. A lot of times, political news leads to discussion on political actors. Namely, what happens with Bush and Congress(usually accused of being Bush bashing).

The political forum was changed into the bullpen, it brought a lot of the "interesting tidbits from around the world" stuff with it. I know some of us got yelled at for taking umbrage with some of the non-political tabloid stuff. I hate the tabloid stuff too. I would love to see it turned into a forum for debate and discussion.

I would appreciate it if people would use legitimate sources for discussion articles. Some of the posts on here have contained articles from pretty questionable sources, like conspiracy theory sites.

I consider FoxNews a questionable source, but thats just me.

I agree to some extent, I really don't care if people post articles as long as they're starting points for discussion. However, usually people post articles and then people read and bitch about the source and it goes to crap from there a lot of times.

It sucks debating in a forum that's just people posting articles and taking ideas from other places and not debating from their own standpoint, to some extent.

I dunno, even though I'm guilty of it, this has turned into the pissing contest/argument forum and seeing who has the bigger debate weiner (two penis related analogies in ONE sentence, beat that!). It's gotten kind of old. But, I don't come in here as much lately, anyways, unless it's a story I'm interested in.

Good to see they're keeping the old academic standards up at wherever you go to school (NIU, I suppose). :thumbup

''I consider FoxNews a questionable source, but thats just me''

No, its me too. There is no such thing as a 100% ''legitimate sources''

Some alternative media sources provide real and correct information, they have nothing to gain, so they have nothing to lose.
