June 11, 200620 yr Rush -- I'll admit -- is not for everyone. They're also something of an acquired taste. I remember it taking me a little while to get into them; but once I did, they became one of my favorites. What other songs have you listened to besides Tom Sawyer, Mark? Would you mind if I offered a few suggestions?
June 11, 200620 yr Author Offer some suggestions Beet, I'd love to hear them. I've basically heard their more popular stuff...Closer to the Heart, Limelight, Spirit of Radio, Working Man. I really dig Tom Sawyer though. It's been a favorite on my iPod over the last week or so.
June 11, 200620 yr The radio hits are OK; but as with most great classic bands, it's the hidden gems in their catalogue that are the real treasure. The style and lyrics of Rush vary greatly depending on the period and mood; but the musicianship is always top notch. Try to concentrate on only one instrument per listen (first drums, then bass, then guitar, etc.) to get a better appreciation. Here's a list that I think is good for starters: 2112 Overture (Instrumental) A Farewell To Kings La Villa Strangiato (Instrumental) By-Tor and The Snow Dog YYZ (Instrumental) Subdivisions Show Don't Tell Cut To The Chase Leave That Thing Alone (Instrumental) And, if you don't mind the 'slow songs', there's two I recommend: Time Stand Still The Pass Limelight is actually a great song, one of their best in fact. But, as I said earlier, it took me a while to "get it". Give it a few more listens (one instrument at a time) -- or better yet, watch the video. Who knows, it may grow on you yet.
June 13, 200620 yr *late* Tom Sawyer is an amazing song. I haven't really gotten into Rush besides Tom Sawyer, Limelight, and this cool drum solo I have of Nick Pearlt. However I'm going to listen to those songs when I get everything acclimated again.
June 13, 200620 yr I went back and thought up a few more recs, for those interested: Anthem (Nice rocker from their early days) Freewill (Great guitar work from Lifeson carries the song) Red Barchetta (I suggest reading the lyrics as you listen; it's a wonderful song) The Analog Kid Distant Early Warning (Nice solo) Manhattan Project (again, lyrics make this song) Where's My Thing? (Instrumental - a little too much synth, but great bass & drums) Between Sun & Moon Limbo (Instrumental) Enjoy.
June 13, 200620 yr Good suggestions Beetle. :thumbup I can remember listening to YYZ as a kid just blown away. Tom Sawyer's awesome though.
