Griffey moves into 11th on homer list

No. 549 puts Reds outfielder ahead of Schmidt

CLEVELAND -- Another Ken Griffey Jr. home run has moved him past another Hall of Famer.

Griffey's fourth-inning long ball off the Indians' Jeremy Sowers on Sunday at Jacobs Field was career homer No. 549 and moved him into sole possession of 11th place on the all-time list, ahead of Mike Schmidt.

The two-run shot traveled 418 feet, clearing the center-field fence to give the Reds a 2-0 lead over Cleveland.

Sowers, who was making his big-league debut, was the 350th pitcher Griffey has homered against. It was the 36-year-old Griffey's 13th homer this season.

Reggie Jackson and his 563 homers are in between Griffey and 10th place all time.

The milestone also gave Griffey 1,577 RBIs, which moved him past Sammy Sosa's 1,575 RBIs for 27th all time.

Good for him, but what could have been...

Exactly what I was thinking.

I'll be absolutely shocked if he isn't the 5th member of the 600 Home Run club.

I wouldn't be shocked. It's a question of health. Can't hit homers if you don't play.

At least we can all say in the era of me-first steroid enhanced sluggers (and pitchers, let us not forget), Griffey was one guy who played the game the right way.

Good.. I'm pulling for him to get in the playoffs this year and win the division..

After today, only 2 games back with the Royals coming to town.

I'll be absolutely shocked if he isn't the 5th member of the 600 Home Run club.

51 home runs in 2.5 years? Even with his 'knack' for missing games? I think it's nearly a lock.

He'll play for more then 2 years if he doesn't win a title with the Reds. He'll sign with a good AL team and be a DH. Hopefully he gets a title with us and retires, but I doubt that happens.

I don't know. He hit 63 home runs over 4 years from 2001-2004. Last year he managed to stay healthy enough to hit 35. But that's almost an outlier at this point.

We'll see. I'll be rooting for him, for sure. I just can't come close to calling it a lock. I'm not even sure if I'd put his chances over 50/50, once you factor in increasing age.

i'll root for him...it'll be important for him to stay healthy, that's the main thing..if it wasn't for the hamstring injuries --man i can't imagine where he'd be in the homer list..anyone think he'd of passed mays?

Many of Griffey's injuries were fluke injuries - not as fluke as Matsui's broken wrist or Sheffield's whatever he has - and he's been great when healthy. He played more than 4/5 of last season and although he was out for a stretch this year, he's not much more likely than his peers to go down with an injury. He's pretty much a lock for 600. I can see him ending up back in Seattle in a couple of years if they're competitive.

I remember a lot of pulled muscles and what not, but who knows.

Anyway, he homered in his 4th straight game tonight.

Yep the man is feeling it right now.

Hopefully he gets voted as an all-star starter
