Yeah so I've written to Mike B. a few times during this season when I read something of his that convinces me he's a bigger idiot than I previously thought. I thought it would be fun to share some of my correspondance with the group.

On Sept. 25 I wrote:

Mike,

You probably don?t remember but I sent you an email around the ASB basically asking why you continually tear down the Marlins in your writings when they have such an exciting, young core group of players. You sarcastically replied that comments like mine are why you do it.

Well Mike, after reading your stuff this last month I guess the boss man put the pinch on you to spread the word about the Fish. Or maybe it could just be the fact that you cannot deny this team anymore. They are good aren?t they? Obviously that?s easy to say with the wildcard so close now. I guess you?ve already figured that out now though.

When is the, ?Sorry for BASHING your team all year now I?ll try to convince you to go to their games? article coming?

JD,

I think I was sarcastic because your note was insulting. I don't believe I ever bashed this year's team in particular. I picked it to win 84 games and finish third, not that far off. What I questioned, beginning in late May with the team 10 games under .500, was when the selloff would begin. To management's credit, it gave this team every opportunity to turn things around. I think I've treated them quite well in print and on the air since the Urbina deal. That showed me something. There will be no self-serving, mea culpa column from me. I'll leave that sort of junk to my competition.

In Mike's defense, and he doesn't need me to defend him, as frustrated as the guy has been over being frozen out of the Torborg firing story, and as unflattering as some of his comments about this franchise have been this summer he never sunk to the level of the Herald's reporters and columnists, and for that I'm thankful.

Mike did one thing this summer that I'm thankful for. He stopped with the "they're going to sell off the team in the post season" stuff and let the fans enjoy themselves this summer. He said as much, several times on QAM with the loathesome Hank Goldberg. He certainly isn't in the same league with Miller (Loria=Most Visible Parasite) and Lebatard (signing Pudge = breast implants on a corpse) or Rosenthal at the Sporting News ("Pudge has been exiled to the Marlins, baseball's Elba").

I have to admit I enjoyed Mike alot more when he wasn't on the outs with mgmt., but he is, and until then he's going to take a shot here and there. I was pretty miffed this Sept when he was up in Boston covering Millar and the BoSox instead of here covering the Fish. I didn't like that at all.

JBurque, don't misconstrue my post. I agree with alot of what you said. But compared to the rest, especially at the Herald, he's been better than most.

and that is why I didn't levy out a lashing at the guy. In previous email, I have commended him on his writing style, just not what he writes. Self-admittedly, I haven't read to much of whats in the Herald. I generally only read the article on ESPN insider and whats posted here so I may be a bit biased with my feelings towards Mr. Berardino.

I will keep up this penpal thing for awhile, he always seems to respond so I have to give him credit for that.

Agreed '03. I haven't had a problem with him since he wrote that negative piece immediately after they announced Lowell wasn't going anywhere. In general I enjoy his writing & email him occasionally with a question or asking his opinion on something. I have gotten a reply every time, in fact usually the same day.

He's taken some heat from fans, and I think that's pleased him in a way. I don't think he foresaw a lot of fans coming to the defense of the team & front office like they did. He's said that even the nasty negative emails (& calls on Hank's show) that he's gotten shows there's real passion out there for the Marlins, even before the wild-card push, and that has impressed him.

Anyway, that one article was the only one that infuriated me, & I let him know it. Why you would try & squash the good news that Lowell wouldn't be traded with a "Don't celebrate because players will be gone next year anyway" article was beyond my understanding. And he threw in a LeBatard-ish line like "sorry to spoil your party, Fish Fans...", to which I responded "Don't worry, you can't.

Also, as national media pretty much ripped the Urbina deal for overpaying, Berardino had nothing but praise for it, despite the prospects they gave up. He's also been impressed with the Conine deal, including the flexibility it gives them with Lee next year.
