My letter to FOX 61 Hartford:

I am from Miami, but attend school in Hamden. I am a diehard Marlins fan.

Next week the Fox Game of the Week includes the Mets vs Wash. and the Marlins vs Philadelphia.

I was wondering if, since the Mets will have clinched at that point, there was any way you could broadcast the Marlins vs Philadelphia game. These 2 teams will most likely still be in a wild card race. Thank you in advance,

 

Their reply:

Technically, the Mets still haven't clinched. The game assignments will be finalized tomorrow, but we expect to stay with the Mets. You make an excellent point about the post season implications but it's probably not enough to offset the local interest in the Mets.

Very nice reply. You won't get Hartford pulling off the Mets and that's understandable...but are the Mets fielding a Game of the Week lineup or will they be restings players and sending out 1/3 of their regulars each day?

well that all depends...are we rooting for Philli to lose so we can get to the WC? if so, we lose 1 game and they lose 1 in these next 4 and the Mets clinch vs us. I say we go for Philli and win every game and hope to God that Philli loses all 4 so that they aren't celebrating this week

Glad to see another Marlins fan in the Nutmeg state

You still got a lot to learn about sports in Connecticut. Back when I was a kid, they'd be showing Jets, Pats and Giants games even when they were 2-12 and had no chance of going to the playoffs. I even got on my bike once and rode five miles to an NBC station (it was Sunday so they weren't answering the phone) to bitch about The Steelers (playoff contenders) not being on. And the guy at the TV station goes "You rode here just for that?" It's the same thing with baseball: if it doesn't concern The BoSox or Yanks (or Mets), no one wants to hear about it.

 

The stupidest thing I ever saw here was when the Hartford Whalers lost in the semi-finals to Montreal and they threw the Whalers a big parade through the streets of Hartford. I guess they knew that that was the closest The Whalers were ever gonna get.

 

Then there's UCONN. Ask most (bandwagon) fans what year they graduated from UCONN and 99.9% didn't even go there...can't even find Storrs on a map. "But they're from this state," they say. They don't grasp the concept that there's more than one college in Connecticut. You try to explain to them that people from Gainesville don't root for Florida State but they don't get it.

 

The only sports thing Connecticut ever really had going for it was ESPN and they've turned into a bunch of jerks.
