I thought that to be a manager in the MLB you needed to have played 10 seasons/years in MLB.

Mike Mordecai came to the club last year for that same reason.

Then why is Gonzalez our new manager if he only played six years as a catcher in the Yankees minor leagues?

Mordecai was brought back so he can qualify for MLB's 10 year veteran pention. You're just confused. MLB experience is a plus, not a requirement, for a Manager.
