GLAVINE FREE TO SIGN WHEREVER HE WANTS By MICHAEL MORRISSEY November 21, 2006 -- Tom Glavine is now a free agent, even if he only has two desired landing spots. As expected, the Mets declined the $14 million option on their 40-year-old lefty yesterday, buying Glavine out for $3 million and sending him to the open market. "We hope to continue to speak with the agent and hopefully bring Tommy back to the New York Mets for the 2007 season," GM Omar Minaya said. The veteran southpaw is on a family vacation designed to determine whether he will pitch for the Braves or Mets next season. Glavine's agent didn't return phone calls yesterday. Glavine, who built his Hall of Fame career in Atlanta and whose family still resides there, came to the Mets for the 2003 season. He is 10 victories away from 300. The Mets acquired a potential replacement for Glavine yesterday in 23-year-old lefty Jason Vargas, dealing righties Henry Owens and Matt Lindstrom to the Marlins for Vargas and 23-year-old lefty Adam Bostick. Vargas began the 2006 season in the Marlins rotation, but was 1-2 with a 7.33 ERA with Florida. In 13 starts with Triple-A Albuquerque, he was 3-6 with a 7.43 ERA. Still, Minaya said he'd get a shot in spring training. "I see him competing for a major-league spot," Minaya said. "He's a young kid; in 2004, he was in college. He's the same class as Phil Humber. . . . To have young left-handed pitchers like him, I feel very good about that." November 21, 200619 yr Very funny, but I wouldn't discount anyone as young as Vargas It took Koufax and Clemente 5 year to come into their own, and they were labeled as "bust" early on their careers.

I could respond with-"Vargas possibly=Koufax". There are few things in life worth betting the house on-this would be one of them. Koufax had crazy stuff. He scared people with his fast ball, especially since he could not control it-sort of a left handed Ryne Duran, and had arguably one of the best curves in the history of baseball. We all know what happened to Koufax when he got things under control. I do think I understand that you mean that Vargas can start throwing his curve and changeup with better control, thus making his 88 mile fastball more effective. We saw people laying off his off speed stuff and then lacing his fastball all over the place.
