Manager Fredi Gonzalez said Monday that Taylor Tankersley (shoulder) is expected to begin throwing by the end of the week.

"Probably in three days," Gonzalez said. If healthy, Tankersley remains a leading candidate for the closer job.

this was from yesterday...good news.

Yusmeiro Petit-R- Marlins Mar. 6 - 5:27 pm et

Yusmeiro Petit fanned five in three scoreless innings Tuesday versus the Red Sox.

The Red Sox had four regulars, plus Wily Mo Pena and Eric Hinske, in the lineup for today's road game, so it wasn't as if Petit was facing a 'B' team. A couple of more showings like this will really set him apart in the competition to replace Josh Johnson in Florida's rotation.

Eric Reed-OF- Marlins Mar. 6 - 5:25 pm et

Eric Reed went 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs Tuesday versus the Red Sox.

Reed's case for becoming the Marlins' starting center fielder is boosted by his defense, even if he did commit an error today. If he hits, he'll have a pretty good chance of beating out Alex Sanchez and Reggie Abercrombie.

Id really like it to happen, but I do not think Petit will ever be good enough to be a starter in this league. I guess it could go either way...just my opinion.

Good for Reed. He has the best defense (which I love for our young pitching), and if he can hit a little should win the job. Ideally Id like one of the vets to win it (JoBo/Sanchez) with Reggie and Reed starting the year in AAA to gain some momentum to taking over at some point.

Sergio Mitre-R- Marlins Mar. 7 - 9:52 am et

Sergio Mitre (shoulder) is expected to make his spring debut Friday.

Mitre reportedly "stepped up his throwing program Tuesday" because of Josh Johnson's injury, throwing a simulated game. He's the favorite to claim Johnson's spot in the rotation.

Says he's the favorite (which may have been true), but needs to prove it. It comes down to a 3-man race between Garcia, Petit, and Mitre. Has Garcia pitched yet?

I've been saying all along I believe Eric Reed has as good a shot to win the job as anyone, and I hope he does. His defense is spectacular, and I believe his hitting can come around. I think he's a better version of the same type of player as Sanchez.

The Tank thing is very good news.

I just hope he's not coming back too soon.

The way the coaches have been handling the pitchers I'm going to go out on a limb and say he's not coming back too soon. I think he will be fine.
