Iconic comic hero gunned down by sniper

Captain America, one of Marvel Comics oldest and most iconic characters, was killed in the latest issue of his self-titled comic book. He was 66 years old.The legendary crime fighter was shot by a sniper's bullet while exiting the Federal Courthouse.

 

Captain America came on the scene in 1941 as a patriotic crime fighter who battled Nazis in World War II. Also known as Steve Rogers, the superhero served his country by signing up for a "super soldier serum," which enabled him to become the ultimate fighting machine for the U.S.

 

After the war, Captain America went on to battle Cold War Communists before entering suspended animation so that he may serve his country in the future. He returned to action decades later where he helped set up the Avengers and continued the good fight in his own line of comics.

 

In the last seven decades, Jack Kirby and Joe Simon's creation has sold 210 million comic books and has been printed in over 70 different countries.

 

Rogers was never married and has no known living relatives.

na man, i neva read comics only seen all the cartoons, and i always thought captain america was a cool dude i seen for the 1st time on spiderman the cartoon when spidy went back in time and sh*t.....

 

i wonder why they would kill em off now?

Pretty much a group called the New Warriors had a reality TV show were they catch villains. They went to catch some people and this guy named Nitro went crazy and blew up a few blocks of the city, including an elementary school.

 

That led to there being a law that heroes had to register their identities with the government, Iron Man was for it and Captain America was against it. They both had groups and in the end they battled, Iron Man won because Cap gave up when he saw all the damage they were causing. All the super heroes got set free and had to register, Cap went to jail.

 

And thats it in a nutshell.

I read a couple of the comics from that series. They were really well done.

He'll be back within five years.

 

They never stay dead.

 

This is a ploy boy Marvel to get media attention along the lines of Superman's death and Batman getting his back broken. Also, later on it's reported Cap isn't dead and is being worked on in a boat in the Hudson River and isn't dead but in a coma (possibly).

 

The thing I like... Is that they're developing a Cap movie right now. Hopefully it's more along the lines of The Ultimates Cap story (a WW2 battle hardened hero story who uncovers an alien plot in the midst of the Nazi uprising) or the current comic (which is more of a spy thriller and featuring more Tom Clancy type of stories with Cap and his shield in them).

I know this doesn't mean the character will completely disappear, but seriously...why? Kill of Batman and Spider-Man while you're at it. Fools.

Anyone who does like comics should pick this issue up, it's well written.

 

What's more, it wasn't marketed to retailers as the "death" of Captain America, this was a legit hush-hush work on the part of Marvel. It's been substantially underordered and is sold-out just about everywhere.

 

I don't think it's a cheap sales ploy like the Superman death, otherwise it'd have been hyped to the moon (remember, orders are due 6 weeks before the book, and this wasn't previewed).

 

As for the way to bring him back, well, I guess they left themselves an out with Dr. Faustus (a Mysterio-type) but it seems (judging by Quesada's tone) quite definitive in at least the short term.

 

Punisher's got the mask anyway, so there'll be a new Captain America pretty soon, just no Steve Rogers.

Well sh*t. I will have to pick up that issue. I'm not a huge Marvel Fan (more of a DC guy, myself), but I did not expect Captain America to die.
