March 22, 200719 yr I'm a little surprised he went with Olsen for the No. 2 spot and not Anibal. I think Anibal has shown that he is the second best (maybe the best) pitcher on the team.
March 22, 200719 yr I have no problem with Gonzalez slotting Olsen behind Willis. Splitting the lefties is very overrated. I just wish Mitre and Petit would not be needed in the rotation. When they pitch.....by tickets in the Fish Tank or the Publix Power Alley and bring your MITT!

The Mets, Phillies and Braves all hit better off righties than lefties last year and by putting Olsen after DTrain we get better matchups early in the season when we face them. I think it's great Fredi is doing something like this and I was thrilled when I read his reasoning. Earlier in ST I read he was thinking about having Hanley bunt a runenr over until the bench coach talked him out of it and I cringed when I read that but it's great to read about moves like this one with the rotation.
March 23, 200719 yr Willis and Olsen being back-to-back in the rotation is good not because they are both lefties but because they are two best available pitchers. I always want my best pitcher on the mound in any situation to hell if they are lefty or righty. I agree with the move because of the matchups but why do you think Olsen is better than Sanchez? It can't possibly be performance given that Sanchez clearly outpitched Olsen last year so I'm just wondering. Last year's stats are pretty much out the window. Especially since we are talking about rookies last year. Might want to check on how they are pitching this ST. And not just their stats either. See what pitches they are working on and how they are developing. Actually go to the games and watch them. A person that goes on the previous year's stats would be the type of person that would pay Carl Pavano $10 mil a year. A person who would favor how a pitcher looks in spring training over the results from the previous season is a lunatic...with all due respect. That's your opinion. But don't overlook what I am saying either. We are talking rookie pitchers last year (for the record I have always been against pitchers winning ROY and I know that I am in the minority on that). I never put alot of trust in them. Let other teams see them a few times to learn their tendancies. I also don't look at ST stats. Instead I try to see what they are working on and how they are improving their arsenal and pitching skills to become "pitchers" in this league. Since I haven't really seen all the rookies from last year pitch this ST I have no real opinion on the current rotation. I have seen Sanchez a couple of times and he looked great in one game and okay at the Nats. Reading his comments after the Nats game led me to believe he was working on things and also not letting that team see too much of him before his season opener at Washington. The only thing I have seen Scotty do this ST is sign autographs and wave to cameras. He does that very well. Of course nada for JJ. Ditto for Ricky. So I have to go with what the coaches feel is the best thing. And I stick by my Pavano comment as well. One good year does not lift any pitcher to those kinds of heights. Anyone that goes with a single season stats is a lunatic...with all due respect. I'm a little surprised he went with Olsen for the No. 2 spot and not Anibal. I have no problem with the rotation. The start of the season is when you can get more of the matchups you want and this is what Fredi feels is best. So be it. I haven't been to every ST game and have seen just a sampling of what the starters are doing. I like that Fredi is thinking ahead and listening to his coaching staff. Even if it proves to be flawed thinking. Rookies make mistakes, even rookie managers/coaches. Fredi will get his share of blasting from the fans as the season progresses no matter what he does. At least he isn't falling asleep at the wheel at some Jupiter intersection. I still feel people put too much emphasis on how a rookie pitcher does. I'll trust the coaching staff over fans' views any day.
March 23, 200719 yr I like what Fredi did. Personally, I think at this stage in their careers Anibal is better than Olsen. I think in a year or two Olsen will be better because he's got NASTY stuff. I just think Anibal is a better all around pitcher. Smarter.

Consistent past performance is the greatest single indicator of future performance, in sports and in life.

If they can all stay healthy it will be interesting to see how they adjust to the adjustments. I like Anibal alot. I think that so far Scotty has a tendancy to let his emotions get in the way of his pitching. I believe if Scotty can get that under control then he will become the far better pitcher, and because I haven't seen him this ST I have no idea how he is progressing there. But I also believe JJ is the guy that becomes the staff ace.
