So i dropped by Sam Ash a couple days and bought an Acoustic Guitar, because i've always wanted to learn to play guitar. Thing is i don't know anything about guitar, sooo i wanted to ask if anyone know's a good book for a beginner in Guitar. I already found "Beginner guitar for dummies" lol, but idk if that's any good..

You may also want to try having someone who plays guitar show you some basic chords.

 

That's how I originally learned. Just have them show you the big chords like E, G , A , D, C and B. Then you can work your way though the majors and minor chords. You'll be suprised just how much you'll learn just by messing around on your own.

 

 

Power chords are very easy to learn. Have someone show you that also. I would suggest a few lessons if you don't have any friends that play.

This is a great free site to start with the basics (seriously read through it all even if some of the basics seem dumb or obvious on the surface).

 

Good choice on getting in to a guitar as a hobby. I've been playing Acoustic since I was 12 and more seriously since high school. It is a great skill to have and it is a lot of fun as well.

Yeah, i'm planning on taking summer term off from college and i might take some guitar lessons with a professor or do something like that.

 

 

My Guitar is a Steel String Acoustic, i like it and all but dammit i wish i can make good use of it right now. I think the sounds that come out of Guitars and Pianos are the best sounds to human ear.

Yeah, Guitar is an interesting instrument and i don't think you can ever get bored of it. You get something new out of it everyday, but that applies to almost every instrument out there as well.

I took it up when I was 18, and yeah, pretty much the internet is your friend. That was 7 years ago, so there's a probably a lot more out there now. And once you learn the basic chords, I would start looking around the net for some tabs of some songs you like. In case you don't know, tablature is written music for guitar. You don't need any background in music to understand it, though you will probably have to read up just a little on it to understand what the hell is going on. And the quality and complexity of tabs varies greatly...some just give you chords, which is probably what you want to start off with, while others spell out riffs. Anyway, straight drilling can get kind of boring, so definitely spice it up by playing some songs you like. I think as you do that, you'll be encouraged to try to learn more and more and get better and better, so that you can play harder stuff.

I actually just bought a Stratocaster last week so thanks for the links and info everyone. I have a small advantage in that I've played other instruments, mainly the saxophone for 10 years, but it's going to be a tough learning experience.

tune it in open E and get a slide.

One tip I have for people just starting - keep your form right! And also, I have been looking for tabs online to have fun with because learning chords gets boring. I looked at the tab for "Other Side" by RHCP on a few different sites, and some of them were actually wrong, but I kept looking and found a fantastic way to play it and it's actually quite easy.

 

 

Anyway, back to practice.
