April 18, 200719 yr I remember Hanley being erratic last season defensively, but also making some spectacular plays. ETA: I'm amazed that Hanley's being criticized so much for his defense... 12 games into the season. For me at least I've thought this since last season, this isn't just based on 12 games. But also, I responded to something above and I inadvertently have taken us off subject so let me get back. The more I think about Julio's situation the more I think this is exactly the time to waive him with the intention of sending himt to Albuquerque. I don't know exactly how this works from an accounting standpoint vis a vis MLB standards and practices BUT the Marlins did receive $1 million from the Diamondbacks in the deal. I don't believe they have any obligation to pass that along to anyone who would pick him up off waivers so someone acquiring him would be assuming the entire (prorated) $3.6 million contract making him that much less desirable and boosting his chances of clearly waivers. I suppose he could refuse to go (he has enough years I believe for that to be his right) but he and his agent are going to belooking at the big pitcure, which is what is he going tobe worth in 2008 when he hits free agency? He would be better served to go to the 'Topes and attempt a comeback than linger unemployed and unwanted. In any event, I still believe the end is near. I believe he would be better served going to Hgh A and working his way back from there. he has just lost his ability to throw strikes BTW I have never seen a thread grow so fast...Wow!
April 18, 200719 yr Polo Shadez has a huge range and has had many great plays in the past I am sure he is limited by the hammy right now. I am sorry to say this but it may be like this for awhile...those injuries are slow healers Well last year he was last in MLB among SS in Zone Rating. I think he's below average defensively but I guess you don't agree. I think as he matures his number of errors should decrease but I don't think his range will necessarily improve.
April 18, 200719 yr Julio should go and Gardner should come but assuming Julio doesn't go how about DLing De Aza and calling up Gardner? Yes, we would be a position player short but in essence we're already a position player short given that De Aza is available only for PH duties and someone would need to run for him if he gets on base and Gardner could certainly help the bullpen vs the Mets. Unfortunately Fredi used De Aza on the 15th so he can't be DLed retroactive to the 10th.
April 19, 200719 yr He's on the DL now, but it was getting to the point where trying to get him to improve was taking over for winning in terms of priority. One guy should never have priority over the team.
