October 19, 200322 yr Basically, Miami-Dade and the city of Miami have been the only interested parties as far as local governments go. Broward has repeatedly said no to the Marlins. City of Miami isn't bankrupt, but it can't afford to build a stadium without help. The big determining factor may be the revenues from the present hotel tax which needs to be secured by Dec. 1, otherwise I believe they have to wait a while longer. At least the city has some solid leadership these days, not the bozos who ran city hall a few years ago. I have a feeling a stadium deal will eventually be done, but both the Marlins and the local goverment (a.ka. the taxpayer) will have to cough up some money. Location will be in downtown Miami, but not by the water.

People/companies buy these bonds. at the end of the time span (25-30 years) these bonds must be paid back with interest. the risk for local government is if the ballpark doesn't make as much revenue as thought and the taxpayers have to pay the difference, but guaranteed lease payments and the skybox leases eliminate this problem. The big problem for the politicos is to make it seem like the Marlins are paying alot, when the skyboxes and lease payments will.

The city manager and city council do, all he has is a veto that can be overturned by the city council. -Penelas wants to build the ballpark, but needs one of two unnamed swing commissioners to switch to the move for the ballpark. -County and City want Marlins to pay $100 million in lease payment like they Marlins have proposed plus give some revenue from skyboxes and ads. Marlins have no comment on this. -December 1st is the deadline if Dade County wishes to use $50 million of Miami Beach's money in this ballpark. -County is worried about having to use bonds which is like a government credit card if they don't get guaranteed revnue. -Marlins don't want to give all revenue because it would defeat purpose of moving from PPS. -All sides agree time is the enemy.

October 19, 200322 yr Author The way of getting this done is up to the Marlins. Give rent money and 50% of all revenues from Stadium guarantee. This is what the city and county want. They want Loria to show them the money, they aren't ready to jump on his offer until he does. The thing is he can't until the season is over.
October 20, 200322 yr At this point I don't understand why the Marlins should even bother with Miami anymore. They haven't got the time of day from one single crook...err, politician down there yet. It's time for them to seriously start thinking about locations outside of MDC. And, just as importantly, they need to start thinking about it publicly. It's become crystal clear that the Miami area isn't going to give them squat, so why not put the pressure on them by showing that they are serious about moving to Broward, PBC, Alaska, etc... Anywhere but down there. Besides, it's not like attenance would suffer if they moved out of Miami. It couldn't get any worse than it already is.
October 20, 200322 yr You know who's fault all of this is? Wayne Huizenga! That crater faced bastard had his chance to build BOTH a baseball stadium and hockey arena in his Blockbuster park...but NO!!! The minute he sold Blockbuster he said "Yeah no, it isn't going to happen". So Wayne no longer owns the team, loves to suck the Marlins dry and isn't willing to budge. HOW DID THAT DOLPHINS LOSS FEEL YESTERDAY, WAYNE??? :rofl :fyou Colorado had a new stadium within a year or two of entering the league, but you sat on your @$$ and here we are 11 years later without a new stadium!! Maybe the loss will tick Huizenga enough to go up to these politicians and say "GET THEM THE HELL OUT OF MY STADIUM"!!! The Marlins will get their new stadium, when I don't know, but hopefully it will be within the next couple of years. Otherwise we won't have baseball here much longer. :banghead
