August 29, 200718 yr 08/29/2007 1:30 PM ET Olsen could have charges dismissed Southpaw can avoid serious charges by completing program By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com MIAMI -- Marlins pitcher Scott Olsen has taken a major step to resolving his legal issues. "Scott Olsen has agreed to participate in the Pretrial Diversion Program," Walter A. Reynoso, Olsen's attorney, said in a statement that he e-mailed to numerous media outlets on Wednesday afternoon. "Upon his successful completion, all felony charges will be dismissed." In the early morning hours of July 21, the 23-year-old Olsen was charged with driving under the influence, resisting an officer with violence, fleeing and eluding police officers, according to a Miami-Dade County Corrections report. The incident occurred about 3:40 a.m. ET. A police officer conducting a radar check tried to stop Olsen, but the Marlins pitcher didn't pull over. According to police, Olsen eventually stopped his vehicle at his home in Aventura. There, he began fighting with the officers and he refused to take a Breathalyzer test, police said. Regarding the Pretrial Diversion Program, Reynoso added in his statement: "This has been accomplished with the approval and consent of the Aventura Police Department, which has been fair and professional throughout. Scott is grateful for this resolution and is looking forward to putting this incident behind him." In his second full big league season, Olsen is 9-12 with a 5.60 ERA in 28 starts. He's not going to have to eat his words. He said if he's found guilty, he wouldn't have a place on the team.
August 30, 200718 yr Reynoso is the same guy that is representing D-train (his wife's uncle.) Glad to see that the homey hookup worked out.
August 30, 200718 yr When I read this I couldn't help but wonder out loud whether David Samson's comment on 790 the other day was meant to drive Olsen to the apparent conclusion at hand, and I said so. There's no doubt in my mind that the Marlins specifically and others as well, have been working to make this go away because after all, left-handed starting pitching is left-handed starting pitching, and as well as being young and cheap, Olsen has been virtually attached at the hip to Admin Beinfest at a number of media and fan events since the fall of 2005. They wanted this resolved as much as Scotty himself. I thought then and more so now that Samson was only speaking to one person when he uttered his remarks, and that was Scott Olsen. None of us will really ever know what was on Samson's mind that day or who did what to bring about this result, but let's hope Olsen gets his thing together and puts this behind him.
