The Jammers finally won with me in attendance, taking a 5-0 game from the Batavia MuckDogs. I was even able to snag a foul-ball (okay, my dad did, but still...). I got there in the top of the second, missing the three runs Jamestown scored in the first inning. They scored their last two on a two-run HR from Bryan Petersen in the third. Game time: 2:05. The top three picks for the Marlins were just called up the other day, so I got to see two of them in action. A red-headed guy who sat in the scouting section came over behind the Jammer dugout and video taped every at-bat by Justin Jacobs, Matt Dominguez and Michael Stanton. The fog started rolling into the outfield in the 8th inning, but it was near the ground, so the view wasn't disturbed. Even crept into the IF a bit.

For the final time this year:

 

2B Ryan Curry: Curry was 2-5 with a run scored. He flied out to center twice (a common theme in the game), and grounded out in the ninth. He has played many positions this year, and it showed, as he made a bad throw on a double-play turn late in the game; it looked like he was positioned wrong on the bag.

 

DH Justin Jacobs (2nd Year Player; 6th Round Pick in 2006; Spent last year with GCL and Jamestown): Jake 2.0 went 1-5 with a double. He picked that up in the 9th inning, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple. Looked like he had it, but started losing steam after rounding second base. Also grounded out twice and flied out.

 

3B Matt Dominguez (1st Year Player; 1st Round Pick from Chatsworth HS; has also played for GCL this year): Sadly, I missed his first NYPL hit, a double in the first inning. He also scored a run. He finished 1-4. He hit the ball well, lining out to short, flying out and grounding out. His flyout in the fourth was close to being a homer. He looks very much like an 18-year old, and defensively, he back-handed a ball he could've got in front of. Looks like he's been watching too much Miguel Cabrera.

 

C Torre Langley: Langley was 1-4 with an RBI and a run scored. He grounded out three times.

 

1B Ryan Anetsberger: Ryan was 1-2 with a run and a double. His double was hit deep the opposite way. He made a good throw on a double-play, having to avoid the runner who was going to second.

 

PH-1B Jesus Rojas (1st Year Player; has also played with GCL this year): Rojas pinch-hit in the 8th and had a terrible at-bat, striking out on three pitches. He is listed as a switch-hitter, but batted righty against a right-handed pitcher. He made a nice defensive try for a foul ball, and ended up sliding into the fence as the pop-up popped out of his glove.

 

LF Bryan Petersen: Pete had a nice offensive night, going 3-4 with a run, a homer and 3 RBI. The lefty swinger beat out an infield single in the 8th, showing nice speed down the first-base line. He was 2-2 against the lefty starter for Batavia.

 

RF Michael Stanton (1st Year Player; 2nd Round Pick from Notre Dame (CA) High School; also played for GCL this year): Stanton was 0-3 with an RBI and a K (one of only three on the night). He struck out on an offspeed pitch in the third, and grounded out twice. He's quite a big kid, with a little room left to fill out.

 

Dustin Kaats: Dustin was 1-4 with a double, raising his struggling average to just .179.

 

Carlos Piste: Piste was 1-4 with two Ks. He flew out to deep center in the third inning, then blooped a single into center in the 6th. He made two nice defensive plays showing good range to his left and right, but also made a throwing error.

 

 

SP Alex Sanabia (2nd Year Player; Selected in 32nd round in 2006; Spent '06 with GCL): Sanabia was lights-out, throwing 7 innings, giving up two hits, walking no one and striking out six. Sanabia didn't allow a baserunner past second base. He really extends his throwing arm behind him in his motion. Interestingly, he went from the stretch at all times. He threw hard, and wasted no time setting, then throwing. He had a good curve that he seldom used, but did have about three Ks with it. It wasn't perfect, but the speed changed enough to fool the hitters. A good sign: when he missed the zone, he missed low.

 

RP Anthony Snow (1st Year Player, signed as a free agent; Has been drafted twice by the Pirates ('02 & '03), once by the Rockies ('04) and once by the Giants ('05)): Snow threw one scoreless inning, striking out one. He hit the first batter he faced, but got out of the jam. He threw hard without much control.

 

RP Steve Cishek (1st Year Player; 5th Round Pick in '07 from Carson-Newman College): The Jammers' closer finished the night, throwing the ninth inning, giving up a leadoff double, and striking out one. He's long and lanky, throwing from high 3/4.

 

I hope you guys have enjoyed these reports. I've enjoyed doing them, and looking back every year on ones I've done and seeing where there are now in the organization. I'm sure I'll be back next year doing this too.
