In 2004 Carlos Pena hit 27 Homers with 82 RBIs. Last year he barely played in 18 games and only had 33 ABs. I would say that merits him consideration for the Comeback of the Year Award

what did he comeback from?

He goes from a being a minor league afterthought to putting up MVP type numbers. If that's not a good comeback I don't know what is.

I always thought the award was for injuries/illness/retirement

 

Griffey back from injury, Ankiel back from his mental issues, Hamilton back from drugs, and so on

I don't think injuries/illness/retirement are requirements for the award.

 

Anyone having a good year off coming off a bad year can win it.

I don't think having a bad game = choking and I still think he's the front runner but I'm rooting for Beckett and Penny to win them so I was glad to see him get bombed.

Wow. Arod is a pretty good ball player.

 

I'm sitting in the firehouse in the middle of the 7th inning thinking about all the opportunities that the Yankees have had this year to do something special only to lose to some really bad/struggling teams. It's a close game, 2-1 coming into the bottom of the 7th, and clearly nobody's counting the Yankees out but there IS quite a bit of doubt and frustration. Arod is leading off the inning on his injured ankle and I'm asking a friend if Arod gets on, would you pinch run for a guy like that? No sooner are those words out of my mouth - BAM - Arod smacks a shot to LF and can trot around the basepaths.

 

All of a sudden, the offense wakes up and starts knocking the snot out of Seattle pitching. There are some interesting moves the game tied 2-2 and Posada comes in to pinch hit, Giambi works out a walk and gets pinch run for by - Bobby Abreu? Really just a weird game. With a man on, Arod comes up for a second time in the inning - while Michael Kaye is stroking the Arod for MVP pole - and he whacks ANOTHER one!

 

I know that people like to say that Arod pads his stats and only gets hits in blowouts and if you looked at the final outcome of this score, you would think their argument might have some merit. I'm telling you, that game tying homer was awesome. I honestly believe that he woke his team up and made them believe again. I don't know how far we will go in October, but we WILL see October baseball. If the Yankees get their stuff in order and make a real run at the WS, I am going to point at last night's game as a defining moment in this season.

 

He will be the AL MVP again this year. Bet the house.
