A faltering sinker has sunk Sergio Mitre for much of the last two months. He'll look to right the ship as he takes the mound for the Marlins on Wednesday in their series finale against the Nationals.

After beating the Nationals on July 14, Mitre's record sat at 4-4 and he boasted a team-leading 2.81 ERA. But in nine starts since then, the 26-year-old right-hander is 1-4 and has allowed 73 hits and 43 runs in 47 2/3 innings. He's already thrown more than twice as many innings this season than he had before in the Major Leagues. Mitre has never appeared at RFK Stadium.

The Marlins are hoping to salvage the third game after they were frustrated in the first two contests. Washington rallied with two runs in the ninth on Tuesday for a 4-3 win.

The Nationals will call on journeyman Tim Redding, who enters the game riding his only string of two consecutive defeats this season. The right-hander has allowed three runs or fewer in all but two of his 11 starts. He hasn't faced the Marlins this season, but has dominated them throughout his career, going 3-0 with a 1.46 ERA in four career meetings with Florida.

This will mark the Marlins last game at RFK Stadium. The Nationals are moving into a new park next season.

Florida is 12-14 all-time at Washington.

Pitching matchup

FLA: RHP Sergio Mitre (5-8, 4.57 ERA)

Mitre remains in a rough stretch, as he dropped his third straight decision in his last outing. In 3 1/3 innings on Friday against the Phillies, the right-hander gave up six runs on seven hits, while tying a franchise record by hitting three batters in a game. Actually, Mitre became the first Marlin and the 24th pitcher in MLB history to log three hit batters in the same inning. Mitre's last win was on July 29 at San Francisco. He has given up at least five earned runs in four straight outings.

WSH: RHP Tim Redding (3-5, 3.27 ERA)

Redding was shaky during his five innings on the mound against the Giants on Friday. He walked five batters and retired the side in order only once, and that occurred in the fifth inning. By the time he left the game, he had already thrown 104 pitches.

Player to watch

Washington's Wily Mo Pena had a key hit in the ninth inning on Tuesday. He also scored the winning run. Pena added a two-run homer and a single on Monday.

Our last game at RFK. Let's leave our mark.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot.
