Marlins won't target A-Rod; White Sox eye Cabrera

ORLANDO ? By JOE CAPOZZI

The Marlins' Admin Beinfest doesn't often find himself the center of national attention. Of course, that changes when your team is linked to rumors involving two of baseball's top winter prizes.

On Tuesday, Florida's baseball operations president wandered into the lobby of the Hyatt Grand Cypress, site of the general managers' meetings, only to find himself surrounded by reporters asking if the Marlins were considering a run at Alex Rodriguez.

"We do not plan on speaking with A-Rod or engaging in any type of contract negotiations with A-Rod,'' Beinfest said, relieving the rumor mill of a juicy tidbit.

Rodriguez grew up in Miami and is house-hunting on Miami Beach. But the Marlins have never considered signing the third baseman. He might command $30 million per year after opting out of his rich New York Yankees contract.

"It probably doesn't make sense to have one player take up most, if not all, of your on-field payroll,'' Beinfest said.

Then the questions shifted to third baseman Miguel Cabrera, Florida's four-time All Star who through arbitration is expected to receive a one-year contract worth at least $10 million, about one-third of the Marlins' projected payroll.

Beinfest was coy about other teams' interest in Cabrera.

"He's a good player, a really good player,'' Beinfest said with a smile. "We get asked about a lot of our players.

"We are not going to comment on specific players or trade rumors. But he's an awfully good player, that's for sure.'' Several teams are interested in Cabrera, but the Chicago White Sox might engage in the most serious trade discussions. He is close friends with his Venezuelan countryman, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, who was a Marlins coach when Cabrera was a rookie.

The Marlins are shopping Cabrera because of his salary as well as their concerns about his weight and attitude. When the Marlins played an interleague series in Chicago in June, Guillen hosted Cabrera at his home and scolded the slugger about his weight.

The Yankees also are targeting Cabrera, along with Boston's Mike Lowell, as replacements for A-Rod if they don't re-sign him.

As late as October, the Marlins' front office was divided over the possibility of trading Cabrera. If the Marlins did deal him, it would be only for the right compensation.

Beinfest, echoing the sentiment of most teams, said he didn't expect the Marlins to make any trades this week. The GM meetings, which end Thursday, would be used to lay the groundwork for a deal that could fall into place by or at baseball's winter meetings the first week of December in Nashville.

The last time Florida traded a marquee player - Thanksgiving 2005 - they sent Josh Beckett and Lowell to the Red Sox in return for two top prospects: Hanley Ramirez, who won the NL Rookie of the Year Award in 2006, and Anibal Sanchez, who tossed a no-hitter that year. "When you trade really good players, you want really good players in return,'' Beinfest said. "The Red Sox's return was obviously excellent in that deal, as well. All you want is value. Whether you are taking back money or taking back inexpensive players , you want talent value. You want talent for talent."

ARod was a pipe dream anyway, can't even believe that was taken seriously.

I cant see a possible fit with the White sox that would be useful for us

Fields, Danks, ??? ??? ???

I dont think so.

there's an article in one of the New York papers (maybe the Post) that puts forth the notion the Yankees will offer ARod arbitration if for no other reason than to get a draft pick out of the deal, and maybe, just maybe bring him back into the fold.

Who do the White Sox even have in their farm system? Nothing special, atleast that I know of.

If they trade him to the White Sox, I swear someone is going die.

he's not going to the White Sox

I don't remember being this shocked. We're not going after A-Rod! orly!?

OMG I am so surprised! :shifty

"It probably doesn't make sense to have one player take up most, if not all, of your on-field payroll,'' Beinfest said.

Funny, you can cut and paste this quote about ARod and use it in the pressers when we trade away Miggy and Willis too.

Pudge also came out of nowhere when we got him....Clemens was never a thought either until we found out later we were trying to get him. Funny thing is, if Beinfest or any of his guys got close to A-Rod it would be news all over.

aww shucks guys i was just about to order my customized #3 jersey with Rodriguez on the back!!!

what a shock!......I'll just change my Pudge jersey to #3 and DREAM.....

it was NEVER going to happen anyway, unless A-Rod agreed to about 299 million in deferred payments

not surprising really, it simply didn't make sense.
