Mariners sign Carlos Silva

Mariners signed RHP Carlos Silva, who had been with the Twins, to a four-year, $48 million contract.

Let us say again just how ridiculous it is that Silva isn't bringing the Twins back a draft pick. The bogus Elias Rankings deemed him unworthy of a Type A or Type B ranking, though that didn't prevent the Mariners from forking over $48 million. It's an incredible haul for a guy who spent part of 2006 banished to the pen and has given up more than a run for every strikeout he's recorded in each of his four seasons as a starting pitcher. To put it another way, the Mariners are spending $12 million per year on a guy who wouldn't even crack the rotation of the team they're trying to catch in the AL West.

Carlos Silva's four-year, $48 million contract with the Mariners includes a $12 million mutual option for 2012.

Silva gets a $5 million signing bonus. The option includes a $2 million buyout, so he'll make $58 million if he stays for the full five years.
