Computer issues. Help please.

On Wednesday when I was searching around MLB.com my computer screen froze and the picture started to get fuzzy (Like t.v static). I turned my computer off - I was hoping it was a one time brain fart. I got back online and it was fine for a few hours. After a few hours it did it again.. but this time my computer would not start. I waited until the morning to check my computer again. It turned on and it was find for a few hours and then the screen got staticy again. I went to the "GEEK SQUAD :geek " and they told to me to do a complete recovery on my computer. I did that but the problem is still happening. I called the GEEK SQUAD :geek and the man told me its a hardware problem. Since it is under warrenty I am going to send it to HP. Has anyone had any issues like this?

:)

Geek Squad are a bunch of idiots and thats just being nice. I have had a couple customers come to me after they got a quote from Geek Squad of $200 to fix a simple thing like a virus. Their answer is always to do a reinstall of Windows since they don't know how to troubleshoot and diagnose problems. I fix their problems for half the money, and it keeps the ppl coming back.

Holly, have you installed anything recently on your computer? Just reading what you wrote I would say it could be a hardware issue if you haven't installed any type of software. When you shut off the computer and tried to turn it back on did you hear any beeps? Did you hear the computer power on and just a blank screen? I am asking this because if the screen starts acting up all fuzzy and such like you say. It could be a video card issue. You can boot up and start it in VGA Mode and that will test out the video card to let you know if it could be a driver issue.

Either way when its under warranty send it to HP and have them take care of it for you. I am just hoping you didn't have to pay Geek Squad.

To answer your question if anyone has had this problem, I have seen it a couple times at school and once on a clients computer. It was a video card issue, I booted into Safe Mode removed the old drivers and reinstalled updated one.

Thanks for your help. The geek squad guys had no clue what was going on. I went to an on campus computer place and the guy said the same thing as the geek squad guy (software problem). So, I trusted him :lol. I have not installed anything on my computer since I first got it 9 months ago. I don't download anything at all - I do that on the school computers. When this problem first happened for some reason my printer started printing these strange symbols. When I shut it off a few different things happen. It will boot normally or it will start and a bright blue screen will come up and say "Corrupt disk" or a black screen will come up and it will say a problem with the C: Driver, or it will freeze and the screen will get fuzzy. It doesn't beep right now when it shuts down but it used to do that. It scared me a few times. The video card issue sounds right. My computer is soooooooooooo slow to boot when I shut it down. It takes about 30 minutes to fully load .

btw: I didn't pay them anything.

I wish I could tell HP just to give me a new computer lol.

No problem glad to help. It is deffinately a hardware problem now. Geek Squad doesn't know jack lol.

You also said you got a message about Corrupt Disk dealing with C: Drive? Could be another issue on top of that dealing with the hard drive. Usually what I would do is run a tool that I have that would let me test if the hard drive is in good condition or it could be dying. Part of the problem could be video other issues could be pointing towards your harddrive. Hard to tell since I am not looking at the computer. The Blue Screen your talking about could be a blue screen of Death, the black screen being errors. USUALLY pointing towards hardware issues.

The fact that your computer is taking a long time to load is never good, could mean u have viruses or spyware that you are not sure about. Cleaning that stuff out and running some repair tools can really help speed up the computer and get it running the way it should be.

You also said the computer would beep. Depending how many beeps and how long it would beep, always tells you there is an error with the computer. IF you happen to hear the beep again can u tell me how many beeps there were and if there were some short beeps or long beeps?

That could let me know which piece of hardware is the culprit of your problems.

Good that you didn't pay GeekSquad and be happy that your computer is under warranty because the phone support for HP is another joke and a half. They don't know what their saying either.

Thanks so much. I did a full system recovery so could I still have viruses and fun stuff like that on my computer? I always ran virus and spyware things often. The geeky squad guy did run a virus scan and he said there were no viruses in my computer. This is so annoying lol.

I *think* my computer used to beep twice. Something tells me it was two times. It did not do it often... it usually did it at night. Not sure why.

According to my HP care advisor it says my computer is in poor condition. Everything is pretty much in horrible condition. I already got kicked off a few times today.

There are so many things wrong with it... do you think HP might give me a new computer?

Yes your computer will still have viruses because they are still stored in System Restore, you gotta turn that off when scanning for viruses.

Do you hear those types of beeps?

One Long and Two Short Beeps Video (Mono/CGA Display Circuitry) issue.

One Long and Three Short Beeps. Video (EGA) Display Circuitry.

If you do hear those types then its pointing towards the video card which is a help here lol. I would imagine it is in poor condition due to what is happening with it.

Will HP give u new computer? Honestly they wont lol. Just because they see it as errors on your side. They will fix it for you if it's a hardware issue and might even take care of the viruses for you. Once they finish with it, it should be back to normal just gotta maintain it after that.

I know there is one long beep. I think the one long beep and two short one sounds pretty accurate. Is this something that just happens or is it something that I did?

Maybe I should just kill the computer... they would have to give me a new one :lol.

Nah its not you, its the hardware itself sometimes they just go bad. Best thing to do now is have HP replace it since its going to be on their part.

Don't worry about this, if they mess up they owe you a new one then lol

Well, Best Buy called and I am getting a NEW computer. The repair would cost more than what the computer is worth. Yeah, atleast I have another 1 year warranty.
