July 4, 200818 yr hows this work? does he go into the minors right outta high school and they automatically have the rights to him? why dont the kids that were the top prospects in the draft do this so they sure the team they want to be on?

Sometimes they will send them to the minors, but in this case they will have him play in the Dominican Summer League to polish his skills a little bit more and fill out his frame. Then after that they'll probably have him in the minors. Some American players do hold out for big bucks (see: Porcello, Rick), and some even go as far as refusing to sign with the team that drafts him, sitting out a year, and re-entering the next years draft (see: Drew, J.D.)
