August 19, 200818 yr The Dodgers addressed their offense for the stretch run by acquiring Manny Ramirez. Now it looks like they've done something about the pitching staff. Greg Maddux Maddux The Los Angeles Times reported on Monday night that the team had completed a deal with the Padres for veteran right-hander Greg Maddux. Citing an anonymous person close to the deal, the newspaper did not know who San Diego would receive in return. Maddux has a 3.99 ERA this season but is only 6-9 for a Padres team that has languished in last place in the weak NL West. The Dodgers moved into a first-place tie with the Diamondbacks in the division on Sunday. Los Angeles had a need for another starter, however, after putting right-hander Brad Penny on the disabled list last week. This will be Maddux's second stint with the Dodgers. The Cubs traded him to Los Angeles at the trade deadline in 2006 and he went 6-3 in the regular season for the Dodgers. Los Angeles lost to the Mets in the divisional series. The Dodgers completed a trade for Ramirez with the Red Sox on Aug. 1, and he has batted .421 with six homers and 21 RBIs for Los Angeles. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3541723
August 19, 200818 yr wow i honestly think maddux would do better in LA becasue the dodgers score a lot more runs than the padres do and this year hes had freakin worse run support then scott olsen at dolphin stadium But thats a nice rotation Penny Lowe Maddux Billingsly then whoever they have finilling i as the 5th starter when i went to la it was jason jennings
August 19, 200818 yr he should retire before people forget he was an amazing pitcher. He doesn't need to continue this journeyman routine.
August 19, 200818 yr he should retire before people forget he was an amazing pitcher. He doesn't need to continue this journeyman routine. He has a 3.99 ERA this season, he's still, IMO, an above average pitcher, and he can pitch till he just gets bored with it, he shows no signs of slowing down. It also doesn't hurt that he goes from one pitcher's park to another one that's just as favorable.
August 19, 200818 yr he should retire before people forget he was an amazing pitcher. He doesn't need to continue this journeyman routine. He's not even close to a journeyman.
August 19, 200818 yr he should retire before people forget he was an amazing pitcher. He doesn't need to continue this journeyman routine. He's not even close to a journeyman. When you play on a new team every year he is on the verge. It stinks when he finishes his career he played for about 6 teams instead of 2. Especially for such a great player. I respect him as still a good player and going to the Dodgers will be good for both, but I wish he finished with only 1 or 2 teams.
August 19, 200818 yr Its Official Maddux to Dodgers for 2 players to be named ESPN/MLB.com say the teams aren't exactly close even though LA reported the trade. I think its basically done and we just have some pandering here until it goes through.

August 19, 200818 yr he should retire before people forget he was an amazing pitcher. He doesn't need to continue this journeyman routine. Thats reminds me of someone...Brett Favre maybe? exactly. Greg Maddux hasn't done anything like Brett Favre except play at an old age... and to say Brett Favre was a Journeyman... he's only played for 3 teams in his career... and 99% of it with just the one... Maddux has not tied up his club with retiring/unretiring several times in the offseason Maddux has not asked to be traded this many times, remember, this time he fell through waivers, and yes, he could block it like Giles did, by why not, if a team WANTS you to pitch for them, that's pretty motivating Maddux is pitching until he doesn't want to anymore, which is a right he's earned Maddux isn't "chasing titles" he played in San Diego who were predicted to MAYBE be competitive in that division, albeit the Giants were picked to be worse Maddux hasn't been keeping a solid prospect on the bench by continuing to pitch Anybody that "forgets" Maddux was an amazing pitcher is incredibly shortsighted, especially if it's because he played for the Dodgers/Padres late in his career. Maddux is still a very good pitcher and an asset to ANY team in need of pitching The only thing Maddux is guilty of is bouncing back and forth between the two best pitcher's parks in the league (LA and SD) where he can put up better numbers than he probably can elsewhere, (2.62 ERA at home, 5.75 on the road). (PS, I impressed myself by finding the bullet point code, I didn't know it existed)

(PS, I impressed myself by finding the bullet point code, I didn't know it existed) I don't remember Brett Favre ever asking for a trade, except for this year. I'm pretty sure he only wanted to stay with the Packers the past few seasons. Favre was also in the same situation. The Jets wanted him to play for them, the Packers did not. Favre is playing until he doesn't want to anymore. What doesn't give Favre the right to do that? Just because he came out of retirement multiple times? Favre asked to be traded from the Packers, who, by the way, were supposed to contend for the title this year. He was traded to the Jets who should make the first round of the playoffs at best. When you say Favre was keeping a solid prospect on the bench, those are two very different situations. In baseball, you have 5 starting pitchers. There are people better and worse than Maddux in the Dodgers rotation. In football, you have players competing for one starting position. Not now, but maybe if Maddux continues to pitch for a few more years until he gets so old that he can't make the starting rotation on any team, then people may start to forget the days when he was an amazing pitcher. Favre is still an amazing QB, and an asset to any team in need.

The fact of the matter is, if Favre hadn't done this "I'm retired, I'm not retired" crap, and played the past few seasons, nobody would be saying ANYTHING about his "legacy". Why? Because he is still a very solid contributor in the NFL. Maddux has not played this crap, Maddux has gone out and pitched, and will continue to pitch and effectively. And I'll say it again, anybody that "forgets" that Maddux is the greatest pitcher of our time, or that Favre is one of the best QBs of our time, doesn't deserve to call themselves a fan, it's outright IGNORANT to ignore that. You brought up all those ... annnnnd a tornado just went through my neighborhood.... brb

He's not being thrown out of teams and signing minor league deals. He's being traded to teams with postseason aspirations as that last missing peace to get them over the hump. This happens all the time with great players and it just shows that he is still a great player, despite his age. His ERA is at about league average and his WHIP was way below it.
August 19, 200818 yr Maddux is not a journyman not anything close to brett farve. He does not complain that his team sucks or he wants more money all he wants to do is pitch though good and bad thats what he does best pitch. Also hes a team player, he helps the young kids out if they are stugling example jake peavy and remember when he pitched like 8 or innings even though he was getting desrtoyed because the Padres had a 20+ inning game the night before. Key thing is he wants to pitch and win and The Dodgers Have a chance of making it to the playoffs there main issue is Pitching and more or so Starting Pitching. I think this takes the dodgers over the top to reach the playoffs. Too bad they'll be playing either the Teddy Bears or the NL East.
