Scott Olsen

Well Scotty seems to think he might return:

But he said his hunch is that he'll pitch for Florida again in 2009.

"If I had to say right now, I would tell you I'm coming back next year. But you never know,'' he said.

I have more confidence in Andrew Miller next season than I do in Scott Olsen.

Talk to any scout or baseball "expert," they'd take Andrew Miller over Scott Olsen anyday of the week and twice on Sunday's.

I'd rather have Scott Olsen as opposed to Anibal...but the contract situations, make it convenient for Olsen to leave, and Anibal to stay.

Me 2, Anibal is a big question right now. Hopefully he returns to form.

Well, if he doesn't work out as a starter early on next year...we could always move him to the pen. He's had success against righties this year...the problem has been the lefties.

I would be confident with Anibal...it's just torn labrum's are difficult to comeback from. Plus, I never found his stuff to be all that elite, to begin with.

Thats my main reason as well thats one of the toughest injuries, Some People never get back to Fom comming from it and in his comeback his control wasent as great and his stuff didn't always work and was left High

But he does have good stuff he just needs that control. If he Mixes his Running 2 seamer with the 12-6 Curve like he did in 06 he can be Untouchable. That No Hitter wasent a fluke.

Erick if we use Anibal in the pen who would be the 5th Starter

RVH, BadenHop,DLC, Tucker or Maybe Sean West?

Damn I hope He comes back but for less then what he wants in ARby

Hopefully a 1-2 Mil Deal for 3 Years and he can be a Starter and Swithc Of with Anibal in the Pen to make himself more Valuable

What?

Olsen is going to make about $2.25 next year, and a 3 year buy out would cost at least $12 million.

Lou do you Think Olsen has a chance of coming back next Season?

I don't think the organization wants to put Anibal, who only had 2 disaster starts out of 10, or Miller in AAA, so I highly doubt Olsen is back. There is always a chance, but with the Marlins having Mitre maybe coming back to the pen, Waecther able to spot start, and guys like Vanden Hurk, Thompson, Sinkbiel, West, and even Trahern and Badenhop, in AA/AAA, there really isn't a need to keep him around. We have SP covered.

Wait wait...did you say there is actually a chance that Mitre comes back next year?

I doubt it in many ways but it would be awesome.

Whats the general patterns around the league for righties/lefties in the rotation?

Its looking like 4/1 for us presuming Olsen goes.

I'm uncertain of how devastated his arm is, but if he is projected to be healthy and they have confidence in him, he'll only make like $800-1.2 mil, and the Marlins can easily afford that with a $35 million overall salary if they get rid of Gregg, Jacobs, Olsen, and Willingham.

He'd be a pretty perfect 6th/7th guy in the pen. Long relief, spot start or move into the rotation with injury, still young enough to improve but older than some of the other pitchers to help them out. He could be our Jason Hammel very easily.

Seeing the success the Marlins had when Johnson and Anibal were injured with the throw sh*t at the wall and see what sticks strategy in the first half of 2008, I don't see them going in that direction again. Besides the concerns others noted about Sanchez's longterm health, I have serious doubts Andrew Miller should be a starter right out of the gate in 2009.

So, Olsen will not be dealt during the offseason IMHO. The scenario I envision is the rotation we ended with this season - Nolasco, Johnson, Volstad, Olsen, and Sanchez to start with Andrew Miller starting the season in AAA. If he is dealt, I think it would be more like mid-season 2009 after Miller has worked out his issues in the minor leagues. No need to rush him again when he isn't ready. And if Miller proves he is ready and none of Nolasco-Johnson-Volstad are injured, I think there is a high probability that Sanchez is dealt rather than Olsen.

I just don't think they have the payroll for that unless they go to $40, or they go Coghlan at 2B with a $30-35 payroll, then by all means I like your train of thought.

But let's say Mitre and Weacther come back, each with spot starting ability or more with Mitre, and they bring in a veteran Brian Moehler type player to join to the pen. You have the injury situation covered, youth backing that up, and you can always get something at the deadline.
