January 14, 200917 yr 60 million is way too much for Lowe. So is four years... How so? Since he came to the NL in 2004, he's been 2nd in Starts, 17th in ERA (amongst starters with at least 200 IP), 7th in CG, 18th in WHIP, and 16th in BB/9. I think he deserves 4 years. And yes, he is a bit older, but being a sinkerballer gives him extra time. It's a risk. Exactly. You don't give a pitcher of that age that many guaranteed years, especially at that kind of cost. Teams didn't even want to give A.J. Burnett 4-5 years and he's a good contract length younger. Granted, Burnett has proven to be a big injury risk, but still not the point here.

I think that is the point. This isn't some injury risk, this is arguably the most consistent starter in the last 4 years. Plus, these days players, especially pitchers who don't count on heat, are going much longer into their careers. Of the top 10 years with the most pitchers over 40, 6 of them are since 2003. When it comes to pitchers like Lowe, their careers are getting longer.
